Because your very peaceful and wise philospher said he was God. If he was just a peaceful and wise philosopher he would be a lunatic. And God phsically said Jesus was his son to eyewitnesses who recorded it down on paper. It is not about believing that Jesus is God's son. Even the devil believes that. It is about accepting his ressurection in your heart as remidiation for your ungodly behavior on earth. It is about putting Jesus first in your life above all. Only then can you truly understand the answer to your question.

2 Peter 1:16-18
16 For we did not follow cleverly devised tales when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of His majesty. 17 For when He received honor and glory from God the Father, such an utterance as this was made to Him by the Majestic Glory, "This is My beloved Son with whom I am well-pleased"-- 18 and we ourselves heard this utterance made from heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain.

You can believe whatever you like. It's okay in the sense that it's your choice and your life.

That said, not knowing that Jesus is God's Son means that you miss out on a whole world. Here's a poor analogy, but it's the best I can do: It's kind of like asking why you can't believe the most advanced laptop computer isn't a stone-age chiseling tablet. You CAN if you want, but if you don't lift the cover of the laptop and just chisel away on it in an attempt to write a book or something, you don't get the benefit of using the technology to do tons of amazing stuff. You sit there chiseling into its cover.

Another logistical problem is that if you believe Jesus was just a peaceful, wise guy, you have to sort of account for the fact that he was deranged. No matter how wise, folks just don't go around saying that they offer you forgiveness of sins, direct access to God, and eternal life.

But anyway, here's the thing that nonbelievers don't get: When you ask Jesus into your life in earnestness and humility, and in repentence of your sins, he comes into your life! Not an idea of him, not a theory of him--but a living God takes up residence in your soul and gives you access to a whole other realm, namely the eternal.

This is very hard to believe if you haven't had the experience. I know--I didn't believe for, like, ever. Though I was raised as a Christian and knew things about the Bible and Christianity, I didn't know Jesus. I never asked him into my life, until I was 34. I spent many years thinking of him as wise and peaceful and all cool.

That was fine...sort of. Except that my life--while it appeared full on the outside--was empty, and I wanted to die, and I was addicted to booze and drugs, and I was angry a lot. And so forth. I had a decent-enough-appearing life, so why was I so miserable?

It was when I began seeking God in earnestness, and asked him to show me who he was, that I began to know Jesus. Not think about him, or try to adopt his alleged philosophies, or any of that. I came to know him as a Person. And when I asked him into my life, he came into my life.

Which has changed everything utterly, from the inside out. I love being alive today--which is something you wouldn't have caught me dead saying before. No pun intended.

Best to you.

...You can believe "He was a very peaceful and wise philosopher" if you wish, but He doesn't really give you that choice. Jesus of Nazareth, a real, historical figure, witnessed by the Scriptures, secular historians of His day, and millions of folks whose lives He has changed, claimed to be God.
...Now He is either a liar, a lunatic, or He is Lord - it's a cop out to say He is a "very peaceful and wise philosopher" - and He leaves you no wiggle room - who is He?
...It is not enough to give agree with certain historical facts and tenets of the Christian faith.
...If He is who He said He is - God - then it is imperative that you and I listen to Him, humble ourselves in repentance and believe on Him for salvation.
...Acts 4:12 says, "And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other Name under Heaven that has been given among men, by which we must be saved."
...Whosoever will, may come. I pray that all will come to Him.
...P.S. Temple Guardian should provide his reference, and then provide many other references where Jesus received worship - like in John 9, after he healed the man who was blind from birth. Please consider every verse, Temple Guardian.

coz the bible says that you must believe in your heart that Jesus died on the cross for your sins and was raised again, and confess that belief to Him, asking Him into your heart.

the entire Christian faith falls on that event, what Jesus did. You are right, He was and is a very peaceful and wise philosopher.... but He was and is So so so so much more than that!
Ask God to give you a revelation of the truth of Jesus.
if you seek Him you WILL find Him :-) He isnt hiding :-)

may i ask why you dont believe that Jesus was the Son of God?

If you do not believe that Jesus is the Son of God you can not be saved. You have to go to the Son to get to the Father.Jesus Christ was sent to us from God the Father to restore mankind. It is not okay to believe that Jesus was just a philosopher because that would be diminishing who He really is. Jesus is the son of God and should not be known or seen as any less

You can believe that! It's just that we Christians believe Jesus is God's Son! If you don't believe in Him like we do, you could always be Jewish!

Peace

The biggest problem people fight about is,who's religion is the "right" one. In every time period in history their has been a teacher trying to enlighten people. Different language's would mean different names for god. Jesus, Mohammad, Siddhartha (the buddha) and many more lost to history, even here in the U.S. the native americans knew of the Great Spirit. By the way Jesus said "do not worship me worship my father in heaven" a little quote that most Christian's have forgotten about.

Well, We believe he is the son of god. That is why we are labeled Christians. The Jews and Muslims believe he is a prophet. I hope this helps you. I think. Are you upset about not being labeled? I just don't under stand you question. Oh well.

Because the criteria for salvation is not decided by us, but by God. When it comes to truth, we do not choose what we want to believe, we simply have to accept the truth as it is. And the truth of the matter is that though we have the right to choose to believe, we do not determine the content of truth, which in this case requires that those who want to come to God do so ONLY through Jesus Christ.

Believe as you will!!!

But, if you are truely sincere, the reason to believe is for salvation sake....

We all know we must die... No bones about it.....

At death comes judgement.... and we know we've all done something that we have hidden.....

That every man has a "story" to tell and that story is written within him, recorded, one day at a time about his life's existence....

and so, because of the wrongs which we have hidden.... we will be judged by them..... there are many witnesses ......

Christ is our attorney......

As the son of God..... Wouldn't you like to have a "court-appointed" lawyer who knows the judge!!!????
