They thought it funny in Nanny McPhee and now they do it all the time. I explained that those are not nice words but then I catch them at it again. What did you do when your kids gained potty mouths?

I know some think I am overreacting but I honestly wouldn't have a clue if this is normal or if it will lead to worse language later on. My 19yr old never said that stuff...I guess because she was an only child for the first 13yrs of her life...but my two youngest seem to goad one another on and yes, they do giggle and it is funny but I don't want them to offend grandma or the doctor etc so don't know if I should get stern..

I don't think you're over reacting. In my house we probably wouldn't punish for the words, but if they started up at someone else's house that would be a different story. It's a good opportunity to teach them the difference of "letting loose" at home and containing themselves in public. Have a talk with them and explain the difference. And if the words are naughty in your house, then by all means bring out the chair! It's your house :)

It depends on what you want to teach your children. If you're not going to limit their language later or be embarrassed when they spew these words out in front of their freinds or yours - then no, let it go unnoticed. On the other hand, I've been around my share of kids - some will let it go after a while, others think it's hillarious and don't ever let it go - and it just gets worse from there. I don't think that you should put them in a "naughty chair" unless they're using it as disrespect to you ... even nice words can be disrespectful. For example, the three year old I am with now says "spike" and most of the time it's just in play - but if he gets angry - "spike" is changed into a bad word - using it "maliciously" (for lack of a better word) - so then he goes to time out. It's more of an attitude than the actual word. Other nannies that I know say that potty mouths belong in the bathroom - and they go and stand in the bathroom for a minute while they "flush" it away. It's a matter of what works for you.

My almost 4 year old son picked up some of these words at preschool...he says poopy head (not at me or anything like that...just to be funny) and makes all kinds of fart noises and stuff to be funny...I just tell him those aren't nice words to use and if he continues THEN I put him in a time-out...more for not listening than the actual words, if you know what I mean. I agree they aren't serious words to worry about but it's not a good habit for them to go around saying them either. Good luck to you :)

My 5 year old son has learned these words as well. He cracks himself up all day long at just the sound of them. The only time I have to speak to him about the use of those words is when we are out in public. He knows that once we leave the house for school, the store, etc. he is not to use them.

Your kids haven't gained "potty mouths". They klike the silly sounds of the words is all. Tell them that when they are playing together and with their friends that language is acceptable but it is not acceptable to use around grown ups. This is not a "naughty chair" offense by no means...

I think I'd probably ignore "poopy" and "fart". As words go, those aren't really that bad. They're using them for attention anyway so ignoring them would probably be the best way to deal with them. I did put my kid in timeout for calling someone "stupid". That's actually hurting someone elses feelings so it's more important to stop it, but poopy and fart are just irritating.

I don't think those are naughty words, and there were never any restrictions against them in my home. Little kids are just fascinated with bodily functions, they're not trying to be "dirty." I think you're best off picking your battles.
That said, if you've told them not to use those words (and you really want to stick with that) and they continue to use them after being told not to, disobedience is a naughty chair offense.

Your reaction gives their words power. Truely little kids love this stuff it makes them giggle, and they are not bad words. Stop reacting and they will get bored with it. You better get a grip before they start school because there are much worse words to come.
