I know that it is hard to determine the size of mixed breeds, but my puppy is 3 months and he weighs 3.5 pounds. His mom was a mini poodle and his dad a maltese. I was just wondering if there was any way to gauge how big he might get? Someone told me the paws were an indication, but I don't know how that works.

On small dogs you cannot tell by the paws. It has a lot to do with the size of his parents and usually a male of any breed will be larger than the female.

It doesn't really matter if they are purebred or a mutt if you know where they came from. I have a male purebred Maltese. His daddy only weighs 5 pounds and his mom weighs 9 pounds. Guess what? He weighs 10 pounds, which is large by Maltese standards.

My daughter has a teacup Poodle/Lhaso Apso mix. He is as big as my dog is. You can ask your Vet and they can only take an educated guess. They don't know any more than we do.

yes paws are an indication, but it's often harder to tell on small dogs' paws. basically with small dogs, and especially mixed breed small dogs, it's just kind of a guess. you figure a miniature poodle is so tall and weighs so much, and a maltese is so tall and weighs so much, so you figure a maltipoo has got to grow to be somewhere in between the two.

all below are wrong....I raised maltipoos for several years. my pups ranged from 4lbs to 12 lbs and all were similar sizes at birth. The average full grown is about 7-8 lbs depending on whose genes they got.....remember that grandparents count as well.

They say you can take a dog's weight at 3 months and double it and that is how big your dog will be, so he should weigh 7 lb.
