If you are going through this, you need to seek some help. Not to be mean, understand, I went through the same thing. Just know that it does not always have to be like that. Hurting yourself is a way of escape, and usually signs of deeper problems. Get some help, please, before it gets worse.

Smoking. Although it is not as widely accepted as it once was it is still generally still allowed. Smokers share a camaraderie as a persecuted minority. It does have serious health repercussions, like increased chance of lung cancer as well as shortened life expectancy and higher health care costs. But if your into cutting yourself, it may be a better alternative. As it also creates a pleasant sensation as well as alleviates stress.
Before embarking on a new way to harm yourself, I would suggest you might talk to some one about why you feel the need for self mutilation in the first place. There are places you can call anonymously and talk to someone so it won't feel like your being judged. I had a friend that shared the habit of self mutiliation, so I appreciate that what ever reasons you have are probably very valid. It may be comforting to know that it is actually not uncommon amongst adolescents and young adults.

Hey, Substituting another self harmful behavior can be thought of as harm reduction if it's less severe. But it's all about coping right? There's a good publication called The Cutting Edge. It's for people dealing with self injury. You can google it. There are good books and helful tools out there. When and how you stop is up to you, but you may need help and regular support. Self injury isn't random, people do it for a reason. E-mail an organization called the Sidran Institute. They have a website (www.sidran.org), books and a helpdesk full of info. Good luck, and take care.

Instead of finding another method to harm yourself, why don't you try to stop it altogether? Seek help, you are ill and can be cured. Don't be afraid or ashamed of seeing a doctor for your mental issues.
Self harm doesn't solve your problem, it only reliefs your pain temporarily but the pain will keep coming back and this self harming will only make things worse in the long run. Don't do this to yourself. Get medical treatment. That is the best way to get rid of the pain. Doctors have helped a lot of people who were in your position. Give it a try.
Good luck!

I cut myself in random places and make it look like an accident, or hit my head against the wall, or scratch myself. Some people bruise themselves.
You people are trying to help but it's not all sunshine and butterflies. There isn't always a cure for mental illness, and sometimes it's treatment resistant. If self harm is the only thing that allows someone to somewhat function in a life that they feel isn't worth living, then so what.

I know you werent looking for a bunch of lectures, so to answer your question: Smoking, drinking, picking at scabs, pulling one strand of hair out at a time - these are all forms of self harm, but they are so widely socially accepted that no one notices.
But now for my little lecture, I agree you should see a professional...I know all too well how you feel and dont mean this to sound rude but the bottom line is that SI is a very bad; very addicting place to be, as you already seem to know. But why willingly put yourself thru it when you can very easily get help & overcome it?

If you are really into this, then verbally abuse yourself in the mirror. Anything physical you do will be seen by someone at some point.
But really, why the need to hurt yourself? If people are telling you that you are worthless, then it is because their lives are so terrible and useless and empty, and they take it out on you in a pityful attempt to make themselves feel better.
And they are probably jealous of you for maybe the way you look, a talent you have, something you can do better than them, maybe because your parents are still together, maybe even because your have better pencils and pens than they do. It could be any little stupid reason.
Get some help if you can't help yourself. See a psychologist. Or talk to a GP. Or talk to friends.
And any friends that are putting you down - get rid of them. Stop talking to them. At the least ignore them. Having no friends is better than hanging around people that put you down. If you want new friends, join a club or sporting team, or go to a community centre and start a new activity or short course.

I can honestly tell you ive had the exact same thoughts not too long ago...
But i have two young kids and a loving partner so i needed to snap out of it!!
Im working on it now and so should u be, "cutting" urself is NOT the way to go about it!!
I tried it and it doesnt gain anything!! Except scars u will regret later on!!
Looking for a way to hurt urself without showing is alot deeper too u really need to speak to someone u trust...
The best thing u can do if u really feel the need to "hurt" urself then as others have said, "verbally abuse" urself in the mirror... but never go any further!!
Take care
good luck!!

You can't hide any harm you want to do to yourself. It's not a way of escape.
Instead try to find out the root of the problem and speak out to the close friend whom you can trust.
When I was still young I cut my wrist because I was not able to cope with the stress I was having with my parents.
A neighbour once asked me about it. When I told him that a cat scratched my wrist , he never believed me. Consequently I did stop.

Well I don't cut myself personally but I'll try to help. Now you say they're prominent. Sometims girls wear those scrunchies on their wrists/ wristbands but i'm assuming you don't do this. Maybe it would work, maybe it would seem suspicious Like i sad i don't cut myself or (think) i know people who practice this but couldn't you use cover up that people use for blemishes/pimples? Is it possible this would work? You may have thought of this already, But if not i think I'd try it if i was in your situation as it seems important no one sees your wounds. I hope this helped you and i hope whatever causes you to harm yourself no longer happens. Best of luck.
