I found that the dealerships are too busy to work car deals early in the week because they are tying up the weekend's sales. The new incentives come out to the salespeople on Thursdays and that is when the salespeople are most excited to start the weekend sales for bonus money. Also, the relief team is usually in the store in the mornings and they love to look good to the pros so they will often put a car out at a lower price just to get a car sold early in the morning. They think it sets the pace for the day!

In my experience as a salesperson, I would say definitely the end of the month. I would also say from what I see, buy from an older man, or a woman, if you are a woman. All the younger (40 or younger) salesmen here are real sharks and looking to "hit a home run" every time. A used car has about $1500 or so worth of play in the price and a new has between $1000-1400 between MSRP and invoice (and the dealer still has their holdback) unless it's a "unusual or limited release" car like a Shelby Mustang, $300 over invoice is fair. Ask to see the invoice. If they won't show it to you, walk. And NEVER buy at MSRP.

If your going to a traditional dealer where you'll have to haggle, research the car you want in advance on a site like www.edmunds.com.
Go on the last day of the month and hopefully poor weather. Don't be afraid to ask if they've made thier #'s for the month.
or
You can shop anyday at a non traditional 'no haggle' retailer like Saturn dealers or Carmax because the prices don't change and are pre published. www.carmax.com

It really doesn't matter. Everbody likes to say the end of the month, but if they already made their numbers, they may just be looking to boost their average profit. It's all BS, go shopping when you need a car. You'll never know what the thinking is at the dealership.

@ the end of the month, a salesperson of any kind is most likely to make a deal to boost his or her numbers. Also bring a calculator and dno't be ashamed to crunch #'s right in front of them to figure the best deal - 0% intereest or a $500 cash back. Don't let too many people run your credit as this will lower your rateing. And don't allow a salesman to leave you sitting for more than 2 mins they use waiting tactics (let me ckeck with my manager) to break your will, just get up and walk out, they will come running, or calling.Good luck.

Don't mean to be mean or crude, but get an older person (preferably a male) to go car shopping with you. Once you find
the vehicle you want let him sit in with you, and don't jump after the 1st deal you come across. I am ashamed to say, but most salesmen (see I said salesmen) will try to take advantage of a lady buying on her own. And I don't just mean sexually! They feel that the female is inferior in vehicle knowledge and business savy. I have accompanied many ladies both family and not and they all agree that they got a better deal.

Early in the week, as close to the end of the business day as possible, when the weather is bad. This will mean a slow day at the dealership so they will be anxious to make a sale and you can wear them down easier if you are patient.
