My wife asked me this question, I found out at www.tsa.com that it is up to the indivudual security officers if you can carry them aboard or not. Any experiences?

I was able to bring knitting needles on board, but I didn't bring the metal needles, I brought the plastic kind I bought from Michaels. I think it would be best to bring plastic or bamboo (but double check and or call your specific airline to make sure) and besides, you never know when security will be tighten so it would be best to err on the side of caution. I spent the summer abroad and came back the day after that explosive scare when terrorists were trying to make a bomb out of cream and other things on board. So security took away all liquids and creams on our carry-ons.

If you're traveling on a US Domestic carrier, knitting needles and crochet hooks are on the TSA's "allowed" list for your carry-on bag.

However, the ultimate decision remains with the TSA agent at the security checkpoint. The agent may override the TSA guidelines if he/she feels an item is a threat.

To be safe, take a self addressed, stamped, padded envelope with you along with some waste yarn. If for whatever reason the agent doesn't let the needles through, transfer the knitting onto the waste yarn and mail the needles back to yourself. Of course, pack extra needles in your checked bag so you can resume knitting once you land.

I've flown with knitting needles many times since 9-11 and haven't been stopped, but I always have my envelope with me just in case.

Most airlines have now relaxed security enough to allow knitting needles and yarn aboard the flight - but double check with your airline. On a recent Southwest Airline flight someone was knitting with no problems.

Yes, it does depend on the individuals. But, I know several women who even had small crochet hooks and things that were made to put them in their "cargo" luggage or else get them confiscated. Sad but maybe necessary. Maybe you wouldn't hurt anyone with them, but someone could take them from you and hurt someone else, or you, with them.
