We met a few girls up here camping but nothing happened. Why would he tell me that if he swares nothing happened.

He might have just wanted to tell you that there were girls there incase you hear it from someone else. If that happens you'd start to question why didn't he tell you about it and wonder if he's hidding something. He's just trying to play it safe and be honest with you by keeping you updated about all the things that are happening.

I think he's being honest.
If he went away, had a blast with these girls and wanted to hide that from you, he wouldn't bring it up!
I'd say he wanted to be honest with you that he met some girls - but he wants you to know that honestly, nothing did happen. Of course, that can sound defensive - but we males tend to be direct - we don't stop and think "how" we sound - but just say what the facts are.
I just think he wanted to say that he was having fun....but too, I can't help but wonder if he's trying to a) prove he's ok without you or b) stir a bit of jealousy.
If he's trying to prove, it means he's insecure - so has to tell you "I don't need you, I met these girls"....
But if he's stirring jealousy, he's seeing how you feel - if you care.
Do you care? Seems you do...so be honest with him. Don't kill him for information - but just be friendly. Don't pretend you don't care - unless you truly don't!
But if you don't care - then show it and let him see you don't mind what he does. :-)

Maybe he imagined something could or might of happened and he feels bad or dirty for thinking about those things, maybe something DID happen? or maybe he was just threating if he didnt tell you, you'd think out and stretch to truth (kinda like chinese whispers) If i were you I'd forget about it at this time and believe him if he said it was nothing it probably was nothing

He told you at least part if not all of the truth. Don't rush to a decision you may actually have an honest open guy.

he is probbly just trying to assure you that he is indeed loyal. On the other hand, this act can also manifest that he is being defensive. If he is dumb, then I suppose the probble cause is the second one.

may be it is just respecting you, or something really happened and he is feeling that he should cover it up before you know it. try to check, get the truth.
