My finacee and I got engaged about a year and a half ago now. And we are getting married next summer. So she has had her ring for a while. We decided to put off getting married until she finished her undergrad. Anyways, I really wanted to take her ring and have a bigger stone put in it. Is this possible? And does any one know a good (fairly inexpensive) way to go about this? Anyone with experience? Anything helps.

Generally, it is possible---although, there are a few settings that make it difficult to change (either re-sizing or re-fitting a new stone) a ring--you'll have to take it a local jewelers to find out for sure.

Probably the least expensive way to do it would be to find a store that has a trade in or trade up policy and will let you use the smaller diamond as partial payment towards the new one.

As well, if you haven't bought your wedding bands yet, the best time to get a new stone fitted might be when you buy the wedding bands. You can make sure the new setting in the engagement ring matches the bands you choose and can also use the fact that you're buying 2 more rings at leverage with the jeweler to convince them to give you a good deal!

Lovely idea, but if it were me, I'd have grown very attached to the diamond I already had, and wouldn't really want a bigger one.

Unless she wanted a bigger one from the start, you may be better off leaving her with what she's got for now, and buying her a nice necklace or bracelet to give to her on the morning of your wedding.

I prefer smaller stones, because I feel like if you just have to have a great big huge stone, that you are either trying to over-copensate for something, or you want people to envy you.

That said, depending on the type of ring she has, stones can be switche dout easily. Solitare settings are probably going to be the easiest to change, while 3 stone or rings where the main stone is surrounded by other stones or a design are probably going to be the most difficult.

A good jeweler will be able to tell you if it is possible. I would suggest going to a place outside of the mall, or the store you originally purchased it in. Also, you may want to keep the original stone and have it set into a pendant for her.

Good luck and congratulations on your upcoming wedding!

when you said bigger, how big it will be?...specially engagement rings are made in a special way that if you change the stone the whole ring with look different,,first they have to change the studs, if it has any additional stones around it or on the sides, those have to be removed ...you will be better off buying or traiding another ring,,by the time you buy a stone and pay for the job, you will be paying almost the same amount of money for a new one..and with a guaranty

It is possible. Get it re-set. i'm thinking a 3 stones ring, you would have to buy a middle and one side stone to compliment the existing stone.

Lots of people do this. you could go to a jeweler in your area and trade the diamond in for a new one, which would save on cost. hunt around for a place that is willing to work with you and one that will give you a great price for the diamond you already own, and just be sure to stick to your price range.

i would try going to different jewelry stoes. the best way to find the cheapest price is to shop around. i believe non-mall stores are a little more professional but just visit different ones and pick the one you like...
