Yes, and they are. If the department is large enough, it is called Internal Affairs. It is not unreasonable to have checks and balances in any public service sector. The problem is, the general public is not required or even allowed to know all of the facts. Much of the information is confidential for reasons of public safety. Such being the case, many people will think the worst about one situation or another that was not resolved the way they believe it should have been resolved. Then you have the small minded people who think all police are bad. These are the people I would like to see even TRY to survive in a lawless society. They wouldn't last a week before they were either dead or on the street without a penny to their name.

Before some of the people who believe all police are bad get too wrapped up in their bad mouthing, they should be willing to answer some questions like "Why were YOU not accepted as a police officer?" Even better, "Why are you unwilling to pin that shield on and do what you CLAIM is not being done?" Every time I have asked those questions, you'd be amazed at the number of "it's not my job" answers I get.

Of course and not because they are corrupt or evil, just because everyone has to have accountability, especially people with jobs of high power. They really need to have a much stronger way to watch over police actions.

YES

But who will police those who police the police?

I think the only way to reduce corruption to a residual level is through a community effort. Everyone should look out for injustice, stand strong and fight back.

ABSOLUTELY! If they like law and order so much they should have no problem obeying the same rules that they force everyone else too.
What is it Republicans always say? If you have nothing to hide you have nothing to fear.

They are, its called Internal Affairs. They are in charge of following up on claims against officers. If they find the claim to be legitimate, the officer is reprimanded.
