I wasn't aware we needed an excuse.
The vast majority of homosexual people I know (myself included) do our best to avoid being discriminated against. As for the religion part, I must say that I agree with poecile.

A true christian is forced to accept every single person. Since the supposed god knows everything, he would know the future of every person he makes...
Since he has still made homosexuals, he must have been ok with the life they would live, and therefore, so should christians...
Anyway, that would be the case if the god of the bible existed, which it doesn't... But since they think it does, they have no excuse to discriminate whatsoever...
If god knows someone is going to be gay before he makes that person, and yet he still makes the person, then he must be ok with it... Otherwise, he's making people only so that they end up in hell...(which is evil, in a way.)

I see it on this site all the time where homosexuals expect religious people to accept them and their lifestyle which is asinine on their part especially when they know for a fact that they are putting themselves purposefully in the line of fire. They are trying to push buttons to see how far can they go with the religious right which IMO they are only making things worse for themselves if they push the issue. They are making excuses and it won't work! Their lifestyles will never be accepted.

I think homosexuals are just human beings that have a sickness, and become religious sometimes to try to cure it. Sometimes it works, and most of the time it doesn't, but I believe everybody deserves a chance to have God love them. I know you said you're an atheist, but I hope you can see my point also. Peace.

beats me they have to know Christians frown on their behavior and apparently they do to or why would they hide it. There are other benies from going to church like it is good for business and most of the people there are nice. Also they are apparently gullible. just in case you have a lie to share like that the republicans are trying to make things better (leaving out that it only making things better for themselves)
Freedom to buddy up to those who don't like what you love is not a good reason contrary to opinions on this site.
This get the Christian vote thing is a republican plan dates as far back as the 80's so espionage maybe

Any religion can be used to discriminate against any person....if the person/people are intent on discriminating against a person/group of people any religion can be turned into a vehicle of hatred, injustice, and discrimination through either the mythology, beliefs, theology, philosophy, sacred texts, or just on the words on any of its teachers. For many homosexuals....and others who have been discriminated by the religion they practice...what I have found in reading various people's experiences is that they experience God/Truth/the Divine in a way that seems all inclusive. For them, their experience of God/etc is real, personal, and they not only cannot see how it is they are discriminated against, but often are drawn to dig deeper into their own religious tradition to find answers to why whatever it is that is used to discriminate against them is used, if it was always used, etc.
Like all people, we are drawn to a religion not because of those who practice the religion, but by our own personal spiritual experiences and we seek a religion that reflects those experiences or provides us with an understanding of those experiences. Whether it is Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Baha'i, Zoroastrianism, Paganism, etc. When a gay person searches for a religion it is not based on the fact that they are gay (and in fact there are many branches of religions that seem overtly anti-gay because of a loud majority/minority but has branches/sects/subsects that are gay friendly, too). As to why do some homosexuals remain the branches/sects/subsects of the religion that do discriminate against them, that do "hate" them? The answer seems to often be that such homosexuals are often closeted and struggling with that part of their self-being. They deny on the surface the reality of a part of the inner self and in denying they want to ensure that the outer world around them reflects this denial. In such cases there is only a few possible outcomes that will occur 1) the denial will become so severe that reality can no longer cause the necessary illusion so the person commits suicide 2) the inner denial comes into conflict with reality which the two realities...the denied reality and the reality in which they have created to avoid facing the truth...come into conflict with each other and thus the individual is now forced to admit truth unwillingly (Ted Haggard, James McGreevey, Foley, etc)
There are, however, many openly gay people who came to terms with that part of the self-being who are very religious, found others like them, and thus avoided the unnecessary pain and suffering upon oneself as well as the hurt of many people (spouse, family, children, etc). The accepted that part of themself and rather than turning to self-loathing and self-hatred and trying to run from reality by creating a reality to live in denial in, they instead realized and embraced the infinite love of the Divine that flows throughout the universe. It is this acceptance of that part of one's self-being and the realization and embracing of the infinite flowing love of the Divine that allows homosexuals to practice the many various religions that they do, regardless of those in the religion of various branches, sects, subsects, etc that would reject them and hate them.
Great question.
Peace be with you.

Excessively moral religion oppresses every one of its adherents by ignoring suffering in favor of towing the line behaviorally. However, suffering exists, and even gay people will seek whatever solace they can find.
Churches, not religions, entice all people with their offers of community membership and support. These are powerful guardians against despair & loneliness. If it is possible to feel some level of acceptance, people will make many intellectual compromises and set up firewalls to guard against self-disclosure.
So I don't believe it is only gay people that compromise a part of themselves to join a church. It is a broad-based tendency to accept judgment for one's behavior if doing so allows you to rest in the arms of a community.

Perhaps they feel that they have a right to be homosexual and also have a right to be the religion that they choose. They probably also think that the religions beliefs that homosexuality are a sin - are wrong.

I don't think they are necessarily drawn to those religions. It's just that those religions are dominant parts of the culture that they grow up in.
