The university my daughter and I both attend has a new student housing complex. You have your own room in an apartment and share the living quarters and bathroom with only 1 or two others who have the other bedrooms. Each apartment has its own living room and kitchen as well. It gives you more room, a place to entertain guests, and a bit more privacy with regard to showering and other things.

You don't always have the public showers. It depends on where you live on campus. Most campuses offer a variety of different places to live.
You just have to be careful where you sign up for, because you could get stuck in your room giving your roomie a spongebath using the popcorn bowl filled with water from the drinking fountain because all the showers were taken.
You also could get stuck with a shower where they have one community shower and they only have hot water from 7-7:04 am, and seriously that one sucks. Just make sure the school has a good water heater and you won't have to worry about that one.
Though community showers aren't bad. There's plenty of privacy and most of the rooms are close to the bathrooms so there's nothing at all to worry about. Just when you look at the campus make sure that the shower is big enough and that's its not converted into 2 showers when it was one regular sized bathtub.

Some newer dorm rooms now have private en suite bathrooms. Mine didn't. Anyone could walk in the bathroom while you were showering. They should have had locks on the doors but didn't. I lived really close to my college and went home like every day to shower. I think public showers were the reason that most students at my college lived in private apartments.

Depends on the campus, the dorm and the room. Mine was public stall showers. The person in charge of each floor (resident assistant) had their own in room shower. I know another university dorm elsewhere that had a shower/bathroom shared between 2 dorm rooms.
I wish I knew where these people went that had their own private ones! :) Remember flip flops for sure...no one likes warts and worse on their feet!

if the bathroom is in your dorm, you are most likely in an overly expensive dorm. Sometimes they'll have ones that the bathroom is connecting two dorms. For the most part, they do have public showers. Always remember to wear flip flops.

Some collages have private bathrooms, or at least shared with only your suite-mates.
In my dorms, at least, "public" shower just meant you shared it with the floor, but the actual showers were in individual stalls. It wasn't like anyone else could see you when you were showering.

In some of the newer or remodeled dormitories where there are two students to a room, there is often one private toilet and shower between the two. However, the waiting list for such accommodations may be long, and preferential treatment could go to the upperclasmen.
Good Luck.

Don't worry about public showers. I was scared of them when when they had a gang shower at the steel foundry where I worked. Everyone HAD to shower, because we were covered in soot from head to toe, so it was a lot different that swimming pools, where only the brave ones shower. What I learned was that when EVERYONE has to shower, there are a lot of small penises and no one cares. There are also very few big ones. The showers were fun and so don't worry about it. I have no idea what they do in college.
