If your laptop was bought with Windows XP home pre-install
when you bought it you start-up with windows xp,
you should have a cd/dvd or a image( in your computer). you can just folo your manual and do it. Because that image/cd/dvd has all your computer drivers and software.
if you bought windows xp and upgrade your laptop to it,
note that not all driver will be installed, so u should find them all before procedding or have a backup computer to search for it on the itnerenet.
The easiest way is to put the cd in, and do a clean reformat. althought i barely done it this for number of reason.
What i do is the basciall the same but it allows no program to run so it's much safer.
pop cd in, restart, make sure pc is set to boot cd, boot from cd, folo the instruction, when it comes down to which drive you want o install it on, delete your present Partion on yoru main drive(ther will be some setup to it i think press D then L or seothing like that, and create a new with Quick option. This is the best way to know your all your files are deleted.

If you are overwriting your previous installation then the best way is to place the CD in, open windows explorer and go to the /i386 folder and execute winnt.exe
If your XP is corrupted and need a new or overwrite install and you are missing the boot disk, then go to a web site called bootdisk.com and install the win98 bootable floppy disk with CD drive support. Then in DOS command prompt type cd:/i386 and WINNT.exe

Not a problem if you have the installation disk. Insert the disk, and it will autorun. You will get options to re-install or repair the installation. You need to keep your serial number handy.
If the disk doesnt autorun, open the cd and run setup.exe

Reinstalling the software, make sure you tell it to replace the old program, or you'll end up with two on the same computer and then your hard drive will be really crammed.
