Whatever your field doing time in the military is a plus. Want to go overseas in the field usually means government or government contracter related. Prior military gives you preference in hiring. Those that you deal with with are military at some level. It seperates you from the pack. Plus it would give you access to contacts that would never speak to you without being prior military. Not to mention the loan forgiveness thing, money for an advanced degree, etc.

Well it would be a waste of time depending on what your goals are. The first question I would ask is Are you married or in a serious relationship? If you answer yes I would say that the military is not for you. Unless you want to get out of that relationship. Then I would say the military is for you. Besides being in a relationship and the timeline you've given yourself for your goals, I would say join up. Get the military to pay for your loans and from the sounds of it you have a degree. Go in as an officer and live the dream but also be prepared to do some time in Iraq or Afganistan.

Waste of time. Take your degree though and contract with the government/military and you'll get paid twice as much and will let you go wherever you want especially if you ask for an overseas assignment. You'd have all the same priveleges of a service member, but would have your own hours, no bs to put up with, hard training to go through ect; That would definitely be what I would suggest!

None of the Armed services are really into Rangeland or Ecology. I don't remember whether the Republicans complete killed the Peace Corp or not, but if it still exists your skills would be very welcome in a lot of places overseas.
Hmmmm, now why do I sense recruiters and shills for Bush's IED fodder of tomorrow giving some of the answers. I don't see Bush's girls in uniform doing "their duty."

It's never a bad idea to join the army, there are many opportunities, just be ready to take orders and do a bunch of stuff that could make you feel uncomfortable.

The Army will help you pay off your loans and/or otherwise help you get your education, and it definitely would not be a waste. We need you! and not everyone goes to combat areas.
