The current issue interceptor body armor vest alone will stop 9x19 milimeter Luger pistol rounds. However, with the ceramic 10"x12" ceramic trauma plates in the front and back of the vest, the interceptor vest will stop multiple hits from rifle rounds as big as 7.62x54 milimeter Russian, which is the most common caliber of sniper rifles used by insurgents in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The other piece of body armor used by our military is the Ground Combat Helmet, which is a smaller and lighter version of the Kevlar Helmet, except the Ground Combat Helmet will stop multiple hits from 9x19 milimeter Luger pistol rounds and shrapnel from explosives.

The military has different levels of body armor in the military (1 being and the higher the number the better). I've heard of 7A vehicle armor and I guess it's rated to stop RPG's. I think I was using Level 3A which is rated to stop 7.62 or a shot from an AK-47. When you think about body armor you need to know that all body armor does is buys you time. Once the body armor is shot, it significantly decreases in it's reliabilty. Therefore once the first round hits take cover because you might not be so lucky on the next round. we also get our plates (body armor plates) X rayed before and after every deployment because they can fracture and they loose their strength.

Depends what type of bullet you want to stop. However, most modern bullet proof armor is very sophisticated. It's not something you're going to be able to make from household items unless you have kevlar and similar items around. Plus, how are you going to put it together? It takes a very specialized sewing machine to piece together kevlar. I know because that's why I didn't get it for my sailboat sails. It's very durable but when it does rip, you can't fix it.

Very! But, the military ammunition is capable of hitting you in the hand and then traveling up the arm into the body. It might emerge anyplace. Body armour does not cover the entire body. There is better armour available from the private sector though. If you have someone over there I would suggest that you buy it and send it over.
