I think he thinks that he's doing something important and helping people have a better life because of his efforts. The military in Iraq isn't given the credit it deserves by most of the press. You don't hear about the schools they build or the hospitals that they repair, refurbish, and resupply. You don't hear about the people who's lives they've saved of how they've become friends with many of the local people. You don't hear much about how they've helped train the locals to police themselves and have trained them how to run their own military.
You're son probably hasn't volunteered for a fourth time just out of sense of duty. I would guess that he's gone back because he feels really, really good about what he's accomplishing there. By-the-way, the other person had a good idea--why don't you ask your son why he's gone back?
Oh also, the whole country isn't in turmoil contrary to what you assume from the stories in the papers. The area around Baghdad is in extensive unrest however the rest of the country, the Kurdish north, and the southern regions are very peaceful and the military assigned there really doesn't have much to do. Where is your son stationed?

well let me just say that I am going into the army (active duty) and i would love to go there for the simple fact that I am helping out country, and other then all the things that's going on there it seems to be a pretty nice place and i have friends that are in the service and been deployed over ther. I am sure eather your son thinks it's his duty or he just enjoys standing up for his all of us or maybe he wants to prove a point back home that he is a strong person and he can do anything that is handed to him, mentaly, physically, emotionally. Your son volunteering is great. I know i would go. I really thank your son is good hearted and if he sould need anyone to talk to why he is gone you can give him my email address its schock0@yahoo.com , also thank him for standing up and becoming something greater then his self, but you might also try asking him why he wanted to go and I bet you he will give you atleast one of the answers I gave you maybe more. you take care of yourself and hang in there he will be just fine. from sasha

LoL. My husband and I got married Dec. 28 and on Jan. 2nd he came out to Cali, two weeks later I followed him out and a month later, he left for Iraq... voluntarily. He was even offered the chance to not go because he had just got married... but he went.. for lots of reasons. Pride being one of them... Just be proud of him and support his decisions, that means the most.

I was working with some ex-special forces guys when we went into Iraq in '03.
They said they wished they were there.

I guess if somebody has to explain it to you, you won't understand.

Duty, honor, country means something to some men. Tell your son I thank him very much.
An old soldier.

He might be that dedicated, but I would say the pay. He is tax free for the year, gets hostile fire pay, immenant danger pay, and if he has family, he gets family seperation pay. Its what got me going back!!
