I'm kind of on the fence with this one - I have had a mate swear that he has had a "yowie encounter" in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland. He is not dishonest, nor prone to embellishment or exaggeration.

Any other close encounters out there?

I think that it is certainly possible. Australia is so vast, with such a small population. It would be easy for animals (especially those living in the desert) to be undiscovered.

I have not seen any of them, but know of a few people that swear they saw something strange.

I will keep a look out for you...

Bunyips have always lived in billabongs and waterways. They have become quite rare since white settlement. This is because many of the trees have been removed from the land, which has concentrated the drop bears into the remaining trees along the rivers and around the billabongs. Increased hunting from the drop bears has pushed the bunyips over the edge in many areas.

Alexander Bunyip is the last one I saw, and that was a few years back now.

The bunyip is a myth, a legend.....early settlers couldnt adjust to the different sounds in Australia and called one of the sounds a "bunyip" in the mid 1800's a weird scull was found and they thought theyd proven the bunyip but it turned out to be a disfigured horse head and was disgarded....no one knows what one looks like, so it would be impossible to say that youve seen one.

The yowie is part of Koori folk law and was said to be a cross between an ant and a lizard, it came up from the ground at night to eat what ever it could including humans. the yowie legend is often confused with the bunyips legend.

personally im a sceptic to any of these things, in over 200 years theres been no evidence, so i tend to disgard it. However in saying that your question did remind me of an incident when i was a teenager and had my first car. i lived regional and there was next to no street lights, and i was a person that stopped to rescue any animal i came across on the roads. Any way, one night near rainbow flat, i seen this dark animal on the road, which i assumed was a calf off a near by farm, so i drove up to it slowly and rolled down the window in my car, and when i poked my head out i near sh*t myself, i dont know what that thing was, but it was big black furry and the biggest eyes id ever seen and was sat in the position a dog would to beg (it definately wasnt a dog or a calf), needless to say i put my foot down and drove off.....i dont know what it was, or if the night played tricks on my eyes all i know, was it scared the sh*t out of me.

There are numerous sightings around australia partically in tasmania in the upper reaches of the franklin river.

I guess my question is how do so many people have the same description- even in times predating tv etc?

either they saw something or they all have a miraculous sense of coinsodence in describing the creature as the same.

I personally am sceptical but then again who knows.
