you are holding on to something that isnt going to be sturdy or is about to not hold anymore. Like the housing market when people are getting into it now it is a rope that is about to snap since the market is going to collapse soon.

it can also refer to a person about his feelings or emotions...
at some point in life we just can't bear any more & we tend to "snap" no matter what comes in front of us ......
in practical terms it could mean to a rope which is about to break or snap because it cannot carry any more load on it.
we can make that out too that it is about to break....
