So my bday party was today, and my friend gave me a computer game that I already have. I LOVE it, but since I already have it, it's not too useful for me. She didn't include a receipt, but is it possible to return it to Target? I know that's where she got it b/c she told me. But what I REALLY NEED TO KNOW, is how to write the thank you note. Please help!!!!

See if Target will let you exchange the gift for something else. I would call them first and speak to a manager about your problem. No sense just showing up there for nothing. More than likely they will give you an in store credit and use it to get something you like.

Then, by all means thank her for the thought. Let her know you have the game already and that you love it and compliment her good instincts. Tell her you exchanged the gift to get something you liked.

I'd only call her for a receipt if Target won't let you exchange it.

I'm unsure of Target Policy on returning gifts, but if they don't let you exchange it for something else, you can sell it on ebay and spend the money on something else. I had the same situation with a CD and I hate returning things to the store, so I sold it on ebay.
Regarding the Thank you note. I wouldn't mention that you already had the game, I would just thank your friend for the thoughtful gift and that you really appreciate her coming to your party.

You are thanking her for taking the time to think about you and trust me, in todays world..people are too busy to REALLY care about others. I was just tell her that you appreciate it but you already had that and ask her if it would be ok for you to take it back and get something you need or want. If she is your friend, she will understand. Most stores will give you a store card (not money) without a receipt

You could try returning it without a receipt. They may give you a store credit. You won't get cash, but you could get another game or anything else you want. As long as you already have the game your friend doesn't have to know. Just thank her as you would have if you didn't already have it.

You probably can return it to Target, just explaining that you have no receipt since it was a gift.

I think you can write a kind and appreciative thank you note without saying you already have it. Maybe wait a few days. Then write "Dear _____, Thanks so much for the video game! "[name of game]" is one of my favorites, and it was such a thoughtful gift. It was great having you at the party. Thanks again!"

Thank her anyway like you would have had you not had this game already. Then ask her if she has the receipt so you can change it for some game that you don't have. If she doesn't have it, you can give or sell the game to someone else.

I think they'll take it back. If not, go to someplace like Half Price Books or EB Games. As for her, just a thank you note will work. You just do a note like you would to everyone else. If she asks about the game, play off the one you already have as the one you got from her.

She did her best, so just tell her how much you love that game and how thoughtful it was of her. In the mean time, I think Targets will give you an in-store credit to find another one! Happy Birthday!

You write the note anyway, thanking her for her thoughtfulness in thinking of you. And tell her you love the game (you do, after all.)

you're thanking the person for being nice, not for making you richer. So tell them that their present is great, it's your favorite game, you play it all the time! (It's true! Just not the game they gave you!)

You can always try to return or exchange the game, they can only say no.
