My dog was playing w/ mycat, and then she yelped! I looked at her after, and she had a white mark on her eye! I think the cat scratched her on the eye. Luckily the scratch looks like it isn't on the pupile. And she isn't acting like she is in pain. She is sleeping right now! I am going to take her to the vet tomorrow! Do you think the vet will just give her eye drops? I don't want her to loose her eye!!!!!1

If the dog will allow, secure a sterile gauze pad over the affected eye until the Vet can examine it.

Good to hear that you're getting her seen to by a vet.

The vet will probably give you antibiotic ointment for her and maybe atropine drops, and will probably give her a shot of antibiotic and of non-steroidal (pain killer, anti-inflammatory)

The problem with things like cat scratches to the eye (aside from the injury on the surface of the eye & subsequent corneal ulceration, which can be very painful, but tend to heal well if they're properly treated) is that the claw can actually puncture the lens of the eye.

The substance within the lens develops in such a way & time that it is not recognised by the immune system as being part of the body. If the lens is punctured and any of the material starts to leak out there can be a huge reaction inside the eye (= major problem if not detected straightaway). This isn't overly common, but it can result in the animal losing an eye.

DON'T put any ointments in it- many contain cortisone, which can seriously damage the eye if it is ulcerated from the scratch, and DON'T get your cat declawed like others above have suggested.

Hope she's okay.

I agree with using the gauze pad and going to the vet. Don't goof around with this.

I'm not a fan of declawing, and am not a big cat owner. I would like to suggest for you to use the nail clippers and cut the long hooked part of the cat's claws, make them shorter and less deadly. I did it for years when I did have housecats and it didn't seem to upset them, and really made it safer for me. When you consider what tendons are cut in a cat's foot during declawing, you might want to try it first. Good luck!

Yes he probably will as kitty scratches in the dirt to poop and God only knows where she has been pooping! Just think of the bacteria in those claws.
I doubt the dog will lose her eye.
Maybe you should keep the two seperated in the future as you were lucky that the cat didn't get the cornea (the area over the pupil) as you would be in real trouble then and would run the risk of losing the dogs eye.

Yes, take your dog to the vet tomorrow, cat scratches can cause eye infections.

As far as having your cat declawed, that's a bit cruel. Cats use their claws to defend themselves and, as I'm sure you can imagine, feel they NEED to defend themselves from dogs. It should teach your dog a lesson about what kitty's limits are (the same way they need to learn the limits of other dogs and people).

ahhhh.poor thing..yes you are making the right decision taking your dog to the vets,,,as its eye could get infected,,then she would probably lose her eye..the vet will probably give you eye drops and some antibiotice...dont put anything in the eye in the meantime..let the vet sort that out...and have your cat declawed at the same time

The vet will determine what, if any damage was done. Any questions you have, you can ask him. If you can, get your cat declawed. They do very well after the surgery and you won't have a dog with another eye injury.
Good luck !

Go to the Pharmacy and get an over the counter anti bacterial eye drop and use that
