Since the establishment of the 13 colonies, the Irish have been coming to America. The first large scale emigration of Irish came before the revolution. The famine Irish came close to 100 years later. The famine devastated the irish population which dropped significantly from the 8 million that were there prior to the famine. The famine reduced the population by 2.5 million - that includes both the dead and those that emigrated. The population to this day has never recovered.

Many americans do go to Ireland to work, but rarely give up their citizenship as the irish immigrants did when they came here. Most americans go on work visas. But the number of americans who go to ireland on work differences is dramatically smaller than the number of irish that emigrated here over the centuries.

there was a huge immigration during the irish potato famine in the 19th century, as soon as they were let off the boat, the millitary, the union army, signed them up for the civil war, there was huge loss during the civil war who fought. Many started riots in NYC, it explains a lot of this in the movie Gangs of New York. There are a lot of people moving to ireland, the economy is really booming there! Microsoft went there, not just americans but a lot of irish born familes that moved here are now moving back. I know a few that have done this. LOL

Sine the great Irish famine of 1846-1850 they have immigrated to the United States. Well plenty of Irish Americans come here because one they can claim Irish passport if they can prove they have Irish ancestors etc. Plus use our free health. We only got three and half million on this Island.
