Like Aussie or Garnier, they all say leave on for 3 minutes but if I consistently leave it on much longer, will it make my hair shinier, softer?

no. Follow instructions. deep conditioners are protein based. Too much protein is bad for the hair, and may hurt. rather than help. If too much protein is deposited on the hair this can cause breakage, due to weight, rather than mending the hair. This is also why you should not deep treat the hair more than once a week.

It does different things for different people 'cause not everyone's hair texture is the same. If you have dry hair, I'd say to leave it on for an extra 5-10 minutes. It's just a conditioning treatment. So, it shouldn't hurt.

I think a lot of this could be myth. I've left conditioner in for up to 15 minutes before and have it do the same effect that it would have after 2-3 minutes. =/.

i did a beauty course last year and my teacher said always leave read the labels on products and do as they say, because leaving products on your skin or hair doesnt nourish it more or make it softer leaving it on for longer...it probably does more damage...
