Protein-Energy Malnutrition (PEM)
Here you will see infants with retarded body growth, very thin, almost looking like no life!! You know that carbohydrates and fats provide us energy, so deficiency of proteins, carbohydrates and fats leads to protein-energy malnutrition, which is written in short form as P.E.M. Protein energy malnutrition is the most important nutritional disorder, which affects the children in our country in the age group of 1 to 5 years.
The most common symptoms of protein-energy malnutrition is the loss in weight and height. In fact protein-energy malnutrition can cause several disorders. In the majority of children, protein-energy malnutrition leads to their remaining underweight, and such children are also more susceptible to infections of respiratory and gastro-intestinal systems. In some children it may cause dwarfing with low weight and short stature. Protein-energy malnutrition causes two diseases: Kwashiorkor and Marasmus.
(i). Kwashiorkor
When mothers stop feeding babies with breast milk …
Kwashiorkor is a malnutrition disease which occurs due to the deficiency of proteins in the diet of children, though the diet may contain adequate amounts or carbohydrates. Kwashiorkor occurs in children of 1 to 5 years of age. Kwashiorkor develops when mothers stop feeding babies with breast milk, and after weaning from protein-rich breast milk, the child from a poorer family is given a diet consisting mainly of carbohydrates, having low protein content. So, in reality Kwashiorkor is a protein deficiency disease.
About 1 per cent of the pre-school children in India suffer from kwashiorkor. These families are so poor that they cannot afford even cow's milk to get the required proteins. The term kwashiorkor means, “rejected child" or "neglected child"
Symptoms of Kwashiorkor. Irritable, always cry and cry--children suffering from kwashiorkor become irritable, cease to grow and lose weight. Their condition becomes miserable. The abdomen of the child swells due to the retention of water by the cells and swelling of the feet also takes place. This swelling of the body due to retention of water is called oedema. Thus, oedema occurs in kwashiorkor. In kwashiorkor, the skin of the child becomes dark and scaly and the hair changes colour and becomes reddish before the age of five years. A child suffering from kwashiorkar has markedly enlarged liver and has anaemia too. Brain development and mental capacities of the child are retarded in kwashiorkar. In many cases, the child suffering from kwashiorkar dies before the age of 5.
Cure for Kwashiorkar. All he needs is a diet rich in proteins! Kwashiorkar is a protein deficiency disease so it can be cured or prevented with a diet containing animal proteins, like meat fish very effective in curing kwashiorkar. A protein-rich diet having a combination of wheat, gram peanuts, soyabean and jaggery can also be used to cure kwashiorkar.
