Because the media needs something that sells. With all these competing news channels, they need to keep your attention, and they do that by showing the tragedy of war. When I was there it was "the worst time ever so far." Now is "the worst time ever so far." And tomorrow will be "the worst time ever so far." 4,400 (I think that's the right number- or at least it's very close) American soldiers lost their lives when they stormed the beach at Normandy- and that was in one day!!! We haven't reached that number yet and it's been three years. I'm not trying to reduce the deaths of today's soldiers to mere numbers; I could have been one of those numbers. I'm just trying to help you and whoever else reads this to think for yourself, and question what you hear.

It is not. Everyone considers the war of their generation the worst. The worst war in terms of percentage of deaths and destruction to the total population in American history was King Philips War, an Indian war in colonial New England. Roughly a third of the white population died and the native tribes were decimated. That was in the 1600's. The worst war in terms of total deaths was the Civil War. But by percentage of the Americans in uniform was the Mexican War in the 1840's. the Revolutionary war is relatively mild in statics. The problem is no one ever had an accurate count of casualties. It probably approached at least WWI for USA total deaths. Vietnam was just as ugly and brutal as Iraq has become. With a lot more casualties. No Iraq is not the worst of our wars. It is ugly, nasty and brutish, just like an old philosopher named Hobb's once said. But not the worst.

Because we went in there knowing nothing about the actual situation or the culture.
All warnings were ignored and offers of assistance by those with knowledge of the culture were spurned. The "evidence" of WMD was made to order, literally, to provide an excuse. The commander in chief is an idiot who has overruled the advice of better men. The results were and are a building disaster, poorly planned and no exit strategy other than to dump it on the next administration and blame it on others.

Pres Bush failed to communicate early on as to what to expect. Americans just expect Iraq to become a democracy in a few years.
It is radically different. We are not fighting a country, but a group of people scattered around the world.

Other than the lie, which most wars start with some distortion of fact, the casualty rate of non-combatants is higher than any other war other than the bombs on Japan during WW2.

Nah... it's only almost as bad as Vietnam.
In Vietnam, we took over a country with no plan for victory, many American lives were lost, insurgents became more brazen, we didn't know who we were fighting, we left, they declared victory, and Kim Jong Il is currently in power.
So... there's a lot of concern over the outcome this time around!
