I believe that the balance goes a step further. God/Goddess. Because evil and good are relative, I don't think that the evil is not divine. Its all part of the Divine. Make up your own mind, but I think you're on to something.

I believe no. I believe that "God" is not all good, all knowing, and all powerful. If he were, we would be able to give us the knowledge of good without the bad, we would have all the good virtues without all the bad ones, if he were all powerful, then he could.

I do think that evil is here for balance, but God had nothing to do with it, he is not powerful enough to be a creator, or else he would be powerful enough to give us the true knowledge of good, without having a 6year old girl get brutally repeatedly raped and then viciously murdered.

God put evil in the universe in order to give humanity the freedom of choice.

This is not balance, but the chaos that resulted when we chose to "live in" these bodies, and act as if we are not one with our Creator, and each other. There is no evil, only God, and all God created.

You put those ideals onto the universe yourself. There doesn't HAVE to be evil. Evil is in the minds and hearts of man.

The most successful strategy appears to be one of reciprocal altruism not unconditional altruism:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Altruism#Altruism_in_ethics

quote:
=============================
Studying the simple strategy "Tit for tat" in the iterated prisoner's dilemma problem, game theorists argue that "Tit for tat" is much more successful in establishing stable cooperation among individuals than altruism, defined as unconditional cooperation, can ever be.

"Tit for tat" starts with cooperation in the first step (as altruism does) and then just imitates the behaviour of the partner step by step. If the partner cooperates, then he rewards him with cooperation, if he does not, then he punishes him by not cooperating in the next step. For example one country could offer another a free trade deal on the condition that it is returned by the second country (tit for tat); or alternatively it could offer it unconditionally (altruism). However, the second country may take advantage of this unconditional offer and continue with tariffs, farming subsidies etc.

Confronted with many strategies that try to exploit or abuse cooperation of others, this simple strategy surprisingly proved to be the most successful (see The Evolution of Cooperation). It was even more successful than these abusing strategies, while unconditional cooperativity (altruism) was one of the most unsuccessful strategies. Confronted with altruistic behaviour, Tit for tat is indistinguishable from pure altruism. Robert Axelrod and Richard Dawkins also showed that altruism may be harmful to society by nourishing exploiters and abusers (and making them more and more powerful until they can force everyone to cooperate unconditionally), which is not the case for "Tit for tat". (See also comparison of entrepreneur and entredonneur)

In the context of biology, the "Tit for tat" strategy is also called reciprocal altruism or Mutual Aid (one of the earliest proponents of it being considered a basic natural behaviour was Peter Kropotkin).

Hey Tony,

God allows evil in the world. He did not put it there. That's the devil's doing.

People give God a bad rep about this evil thing. Its because of Satan that we are in the position we are in. God give us a way out, Praise Him.><>

Uhhh........ NO! In fact, He is going to do away with evil once and for all someday. He's in no hurry, He's God, time doesn't affect Him. He is patient for our sakes.

2Pe 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

I think evil just is one of those things. If evil weren't in the world--we'd be in heaven.

Evil makes us look to heaven and God.
