For several reasons;
Position lights are red on the left wing and green on the right so other aircraft will know which direction it is going.
Strobe lights (Anti-collision) are the flashing lights that allow the plane to be highly visible from far away.
Landing and taxi lights (installed in the wings on many aircraft) make the aircraft very visible when on the runway, taking off and on approach, and also help the pilots to see.
Runway turnoff lights allow the pilots to see to the sides of the aircraft when turning on the ground.
Logo lights light up the airline logo on the tail and winglets and are sometimes on the wingtips.
Ice lights light up the wing leading edge so the pilots can see how much ice is on the wings.

Lights are located on the wings of the aircraft so other aircraft can see them and know the direction the aircraft is going.
The light on the right wing tip is green and the light on the left is red.
There is also strobe lights positioned along the wing. These lights are extremely bright and are intended to draw attention to the aircraft so other aircraft can see them and avoid them.

lights make the plane light. It certainly couldn't fly if it had "heavies" on the wings!

Is because the airbase know that the plane is landing that's why they have lights on the plane.it can be use to help because if the signal is bad the lights can help them that the plane is landing.
