white, yellow, orange, green, blue, brown and black then the degrees then after the 5th dan or so...cant remember exactly it turns to red with white and then completly red or something....but theres also half belts the way i was taught too like half white half yellow example

i also dont live in the states so we dont have purple but i guess its between blue and brown........you have to remember this color system was invented in north america...in ancient times they only had white then brown and black to represent how dirty your belt was which in turn represented how much practice you had....they didnt wash it so the dirtier the better and more experienced you were

"Achievement in Judo is recognized by a series of ranks. The student ranks are called kyu and are usually differentiated by colored belts (obi). Different colors may be used around the world and in some countries there are more than 6 kyu ranks. The ten black belt, or expert, ranks are called dan." - http://www.judoinfo.com/obi.htm

Just like in karate, the belt colours aren't determined by 1 person, it's determined by the club/association, the only 2 colour belts are have been standarized is the white belt and the black belt.
