I worked as an occupational health nurse in a food processing plant. One day, one of the employees came in for first aid due to cutting her finger. I did the basic aid of cleaning the wound, applying the antibiotics and applied a bandaid for the dressing. Two days later she came back with a very infected finger that was giving off a very putrid odor, and had 'something' wrapped around her finger. The 'something' turn out to be a piece of salted pork fat. She stated her Grandmother told her when she got home on the day of the injury to wrap the fat around the finger to drive out the soreness. Needless to say, this small scratch turned out to be a major infection that required surgical intervention to remove the infection that had migrated into the healthy tissue of the finger.
