When people say 'flu' they generally mean stomach flu, even though "flu" is really influenza, which effects the lungs. Generally speaking, a cold is caused by a virus, which is why antibiotics can't help it. The flu is caused by bacteria, so antibiotics can combat it.

They are caused by different viruses. However, Flu has more severe symptoms than cold. Such as high fever, tiredness, body aches and coughing.
