how long after the expiration date can you eat cottage cheese?

i have an unopened container of pineapple flavored cottage cheese in the fridge. it expired yesterday. how long after i open it is it safe to eat? how do i know when it goes bad, will it smell like sour milk? i usually know when not to eat other foods but i'm new to cottage cheese.

Since the container is unopened and presumably still sealed with film or foil on the inside, you should be able to consume this product for three days after the expiration date. The old sayin is "when in doubt, throw it out". Pineapple sounds a little unsavory to me personally, but to each there own.... This rule also applies to other dairy products and juices.... DO NOT use this with RAW meats or poultry regardless of cooking technique, that s one date to stick to without question. Hope this helps.

That was only yesterday! Trust me, that cottage cheese didn't look at the calendar and go bad overnight. 2/28/09 was the sell-by date. You still have approx 2 weeks to use the cottage cheese. Use it up in a baked pasta dish- Pasta Shells Florentine 1 package (10 ounces) frozen chopped spinach, thawed, and well drained 1 cup shredded Mozzarella cheese 1 cup cottage cheese 1 egg (or just 1 egg white) 1 Tablespoon Parmesan cheese 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (don’t skip this – it really improves the taste) 16 Jumbo pasta shells (for filling) cooked and drained 1 Jar (32 ounces) spaghetti sauce Heat oven to 375F. Mix spinach, mozzarella cheese, cottage cheese, egg, (or egg white) Parmesan cheese and nutmeg until well blended. Fill each shell with a heaping Tablespoon of spinach mixture. Place in a 9 x 12 baking dish that has been sprayed with release spray (Pam). Spoon sauce over the filled shells. Cover with foil. Bake 30 to 40 minutes or until thoroughly heated. Makes 4 servings

usually the date on the carton is the "last date to be sold in the market". I would say about a week past date, you might call a grocer just to make sure, and there will be a sour smell once it starts to go bad

If it has been unopened, and properly refrigerated since you purchased it, it should be OK as long as there is no mold on it. If it is spoiled it will smell AWFUL!
