how can you tell how far down you can go

A parrot's beak can be filed but it's a job best done by a vet, and most vets won't do it unless the bird has scissoring. If you just want to dull the very tip a little, you have to understand that your bird needs that tip to cut into food -- he doesn't have teeth. His beak tip acts like an incisor and his ridged upper beak acts like a molar. You can just imagine how much more work it is for a parrot to chew than it is for us.

Part of a parrot's beak is live and is always growing. This area is around the mouth corners and at the inner sides of both the upper and lower beak, and after they get older, it's hard to tell the difference between the live part and the auxillary part. If your bird has excessive beak growth or scissoring (one beak one way, one another), he needs to have his beak professionally dremmeled by a vet, or he might have something called PBFD (Psittacine Beak and Feather Disease), that needs to be treated right away.

If you must, you can use a metal file to very lightly round out the tip of the upper beak. Going further than the tip won't help either of you. You could save yourself some hassle and give him a thick wooden toy and a pedicure perch. He'll file his own beak down as long as he has a way to. I hope this helps!

You need to have a professional do it take the parrot to your vet so they can show you how to do it properly But if you give the parrot things to chew on and so on it should not be necessary to have to do this. If you cut too far or cut it wrong you will have a very serious problem for your parrot will not be able to eat. Ther is also the danger of the parrot struggling and you'll cut his tongue and then you'll have a very serious grave problem. My Advice is do NOT DO IT but talk to your vet for unless the beak is so overgrown that he can;t eat-it shouldn't even be necessary for its not a part of normal grooming.

Oh my goodness, do not do that.
Why do you want to cut it's beak? So it won't be able to eat?
You should be providing treats and chews so your parrot can keep it's beak trimmed normal.
Yes, you will hurt your bird.
DO NOT CUT THE BEAK! You can ruin your bird for life.
The beak is NOT like our fingernail. The beak is also the nose. The beak has blood running through it. The beak is needed to eat.

it will bleed if you cut 2 far down. Use flour if you do. Just nip it little by little. its good to keep it trimmed. i would suggest using a file. I use the file on my parrot, he doesn't like it because he knows it dulls his beak but he deals with it. If it gets 2 long they have a hard time eating. in the wild they use rocks and other hard surfaces to file it down. Good luck & be careful. If you are 2 nervous call a local avian vet and they will do it for you the first time and they will show you how to do it. it is good to clip his nails too.

i'm undecided what it fees on my own, yet I took my budgie to the vet and he or she have been given her toenails and wings clipped and her beak trimmed and it replaced into approximately $80. i might wager to easily get the beak trimmed it may be like 25 or 30 money.

No it doesnt hurt its like cutting your nails> If you dont know how to do it then have it done at the vet and have them show you. If you cut too much or cut it wrong the bird may not be able to eat.
