Depends on what type of cough. When I get a really bad cold, I take a few belts of the bottle of Jack Daniels I've had in the pantry for 8 years.

Hmm. If you can't deal with hot tea with lemon and honey, try hot water with lemon and honey. There are also some serious cough drops out there, with varying levels of effectiveness. The sad part is that as the effectiveness factor goes up, so do the side effects and the scariness factor of the warning labels.
If you're avoiding alcohol, avoid NyQuil. I believe the stuff is about 140 proof.

I like to mix lemon tea, honey, a whole squeezed lemon and a shot of tequila. That is the best remedy. It doesn't really get you drunk and it soothes your throat when you drink it hot. If you don't have tequila a shot of any other clear (yes clear is better for a cough) liquor will do.

It may sound gross, but try sucking on a salted lime slice. Actually it's best for a sore throat but I've also found that it can help me with a cough, too (especially if the cough is -caused- by a sore / tickly throat) ... and perhaps it's just me, but actually it tastes rather nice =)
Hope you feel better soon =)

Here's a nighttime solution that has been in my family for generations.
Take a strip of flannel and wet it with hot water. Wring it out and wrap it around your neck. Safety-pin it in place. Take a dry strip of flannel, a little wider than the first, and cover the damp one with it and secure that with a safety pin. (If there's no flannel, strips of an old rag works too.)
I know it sounds too simple to work but this worked for me when I had bronchitis and even the heaviest medicines couldn't help me shut up and sleep.
I hope it works for you too.
