I am taking my california driving test in a few days, and the DMV website says that I need proof of financial responsibility. The car that I will be driving is insured under my friends name, but it does not have my name on the insurance. If I bring his proof of insurance for the car does it count as proof of financial responsibility for me? If not, what do I need to do?

You got some silly answers! You can't get insurance without a license!!!

The car needs to be insured for minimum state liability limits and in good working condition to take the test.

When you purchase a car, you will need insurance in your own name. If you continue to drive this car after you get your license, you will then need a non-owner policy.

You need to get a non-owner insurance policy with limits of whatever the state requires. when I sold insurance it was $5K-$10K-$30k meaning, $5k for the vehicle you might hit not the one you are driving, $10k for personal injury as a max per person for passengers in your vehicle or in the vehicle you might hit, and $30K maximum bodily injury. None of these figures in any way cover you or the vehicle your driving, only what you may hit or hurt(not you though)

No that has to be you. You need to show your state that you have the required liability insurance. Your insurance company can get this for you. In some states, it is called a form SSR-22
