Removing the clitoris which is one of the most sensitive areas of a girl/woman and is one route to providing physical/sexual pleasure.
It's a poor use of the term circumcision, in my opinion.
If it were equivalent for a man, it would mean lopping off the head of your unit.

It's unnecessary, mutilating, and the severity varies. The mildest form involves removing the hood over the clitoris. After that, the clitoris. Then the minor labia. The most extreme form is infibulation, where a good part of the major labia is removed and what's left is crudely sutured together with only a small opening. This causes problems with menstruation, and even urination. Women mutilated like this can die in childbirth. It's one of the enlightened practices of Islam. The people are convinced that their daughters can't be married off if they haven't been purified of their unclean urges by being subjected to this. Infibulation is done in some African countries to girls as young as five. Here, it's known as FGM--feminine genital mutilation.

Circumcision is strictly a male procedure. Using the term for what they do to females under that name is a gross misuse and grossly misleading.
What they are talking about is that the grab they girl, gouge out her clitoris and slice of the labia minors - the inner folds - usually with a sharp stone, or sharpened sea shell, possibly a knife. No anesthetic, no anti-septic.
They go into shock, and often also get infected. Once they have recovered, the ones that don't go into septic shock, that is, end up with little or no ability to derive sexual pleasure, have problems with child birth, and are prone to vaginal diseases.
It is a disgusting, barbaric, and sick male domination thing that has infected whole cultures.
It is genital mutilation, not circumcision at all.

Basically, it's a surgery that removes a body part that gives pleasure to the female when she has intercourse, so she will have a very difficult time having as much fun as the guy. (Do an internet search and you'll get more gruesome details)
It really shouldn't be called female circumsision at all, because a guy can perform the same either way.

Female circumcision involves the the removal of the clitoris (a tiny nub just above the vaginal opening that provides much of o woman's sexual pleasure). There is no valid medical reason for doing this on a healthy women and is generally done for religious reasons in order to reduce a woman's desire for sexual pleasure. It's a barbaric and outdated practice that should be outlawed everywhere.

It is not really circumcision. It is more like mutilation. What they do is they remove the clitoris so that a woman will not have pleasure during sexual intercourse and then she will be less likely to become promiscuous. This happens in many Islamic nations but the Koran says nothing about this procedure. It is barbaric and should be baned

Femal circumcision is the cutting away of the clitoris. Some cultures take it even a step further and sew the vaginal tract opening to prevent any form of sex. Guess they figure that no pleasure, no sex makes a girl pure. Gawdawful and inhumane practice!

It varies from culture to culture. It usually involves removal of the clitoris (yikes!) and in some instances all other surrounding "tissue" labia minora/labia mojora.) OUCH!
