Sleep deprivation is potentially dangerous for adolescents, whom we know tend to need more sleep on average than adults. Poor or inadequate sleep has an impact on the normal functioning of the brain (e.g., release of growth hormone), cognitive ability and decision-making ability, reaction time, recall of previously-learned information and learning of new information, sustaining attention to tasks, and can certainly influence mood negatively and increase irritability and anxiety. When I was reading about this, it became clear that the reasons for lack of sleep, specifically, any co-occurring emotional and physical problems that might be contributing to the picture, must be investigated thoroughly and promptly. Young people with known sleep/wake disorders, mood or anxiety difficulties, attention problems, and substance use/abuse (don't forget the potential impact of caffeine!) patterns may encounter sleep difficulties as part of their condition. In those without diagnosed illnesses or conditions, sleep difficulties may be an important signal that some other co-existing condition is the culprit and requires treatment. I've listed some useful websites below. Hope this helps.

After 24 hours you will begin to fall asleep every time you sit down and get quiet, even if you drink coffee. Driving will be like driving drunk and it will become difficult to think clearly. As you close in on 48 hours you will hallucinate mildly. It's bad. If you're just lacking a little sleep, you will feel tired and lethargic.
