Well to be honest i really think u should go to the dentist. First of all, all those things they´re saying are true, but when the cavity is advanced,. At the beginning of a cavity is possible you just wont feel a thing because it isn´t deep. U see, a tooth has 3 parts 1. enamel, 2. Dentin and 3. Pulp , it depends on how deep it is, for you to feel something, plus there are some cavities that you need X- Rays to get a proper diagnosis. So do your best to visit a dentist before it gets worst, is better to get your tooth fix with a filling, than to wait and then need to get a root canal and then a Porcelain crown. from a DDS

Sometimes you can't tell a cavity is there.
But sometimes you can:
A chip of the tooth falls out and has a yellowish, powdery coating on the inside.
You go around the biting surfaces of your teeth by holding a shard of ice cube with tweezers or a hemostat and one tooth becomes painful when the biting surface gets cold.
You have bad breath no matter how well you brush, floss and use a mouthwash containing eucalyptus (such as Listerine or the store-brand knockoffs).*
You bite on a pencil on two teeth, move it between another two teeth and bite, and so on throughout your mouth and one particular tooth hurts when pressure is put on it.**
* could also be a sign of gum disease
** could also be a sign of a tooth rotted to the point where a root canal is required.

It's difficult. You can try drinking something cold, when the fluid reaches a sensitive tooth (usually molar) that is more like it.
If you have bad breath even you use Listerine, it seems like there is one or more some where.

If there is a dark spot that you have never seen before and it is not something that can be brushed off. Also try looking at it with a really good mirror.
