Some atheists gain nothing. Some atheists gain bitterness. All atheists aren't the same.

Some can gain experience. They can learn patience. Mostly I think I learn empathy when suffering. It gives me a greater understanding of those who suffer all the time and gives me a greater appreciation for life.

intense appreciation for the times we do not suffer, compassion for those who do, the knowledge to avoid what caused it and the desire to prevent such suffering from occurring again. The same as most others I guess but without feeling the need to beg a god to make it go away, instead of wasting time on that we take the appropriate steps toward ending the suffering we are experiencing on our own or with the help of a doctor.

what do christians gain when they suffer, there is nothing to gain from suffering, what question is this.

Just because they don't believe in God means they should not have to suffer heartache, or pain or life?

Aren't you forgetting that God creates all things and His wisdom is unfathomable and that the atheists today may be the bigger followers of tomorrow? and they will have the same reward as anyone who has believed all of their lives, for this is the holiness of God and the compassion. peace be with you.

I'll take the liberty of answersing this question with a question, if religion is such a great salve for the suffering, then why is it that A: religious people still don't really look forward to (and I mean extatic, jumping for joy) death, conssidering all the wonderful hoopy things they are promissed, and B: why is it that religious people aren't delighted and jeallous for all their freinds who are dead or dying? say high to uncle Paul for us!..... why? could it be that religion offers no actual salve but is just a distraction?

They gain experience and philosophy, I would imagine. Whereas, if you're saved you know you're going to heaven and you have a free pass on Judgment Day, so a little suffering shouldn't bother you too much.
But an athiest, he suffers and learns from his suffering. People who are saved don't have to learn anything.

Depends on what kind of suffering is experienced.
