When he is doing something that is a no-no, rattle the can..I use an aluminum can with a penny in it..He will hate that sound, and know you mean business..However, if you ever strike him, he will know that 'might makes right' and, as a 4 year old may well decide to show you who has the most 'might'...Aggression breeds aggression, gentleness breeds gentleness, and love breeds love,
So, use positive re-enforcement, rewarding the good, and not focusing on the bad..Don't yell, as he will assume you are not serious unless you are yelling...when he is chewing furniture, shake the can to get him to stop immediately, and then toss him an appropriate chew toy...

Rotties are a high energy dog, And they need training. Your question was kinda vaig. If you had mentioned what you had in mind I probably would have had an answer for you. So I guess the best answer I can give you is for both of you to start going to obedience classes.

I agree with the other two answer. You must be consistent with them as well. You need to show the Rottie that YOU are pack leader. Please don't even hit them, that will just teach them to be aggressive.

Positive re-inforcement and obedience school is the best way. Especially for such a big dog.
