The quality of sleep is much more important than its quantity.
In order to have a truly effective rest and relaxation during
sleep, it is good as a rule to drink something before going to
bed, a cup of milk or soup or fruit-juice, for instance. Light
food brings a quiet sleep. One should, however, abstain from all
copious meals, for then the sleep becomes agitated and is
disturbed by nightmares, or else is dense, heavy and dulling. But
the most important thing of all is to make the mind clear, to
quieten the emotions and calm the effervescence of desires and the
preoccupations which accompany them. If before retiring to bed one
has talked a lot or had a lively discussion, if one has read an
exciting or intensely interesting book, one should rest a little
without sleeping in order to quieten the mental activity, so that
the brain does not engage in disorderly movements while the other
parts of the body alone are asleep. Those who practice meditation
will do well to concentrate for a few minutes on a lofty and
restful idea, in an aspiration towards a higher and vaster
consciousness. Their sleep will benefit greatly from this and they
will largely be spared the risk of falling into unconsciousness
while they sleep.

To sleep well one must learn how to sleep.

If one is physically very tired, it is better not to go to sleep
immediately, otherwise one falls into the inconscient. If one is
very tired, one must stretch out on the bed, relax, loosen all the
nerves one after the another until one becomes like a rumpled cloth in one's bed, as though one had neither bones nor muscles.
When one has done that, the same thing must be done in the mind. Relax, do not concentrate on any idea or try to solve a problem or ruminate on impressions, sensations or emotions you had during the day. All that must be allowed to drop off quietly: one gives oneself up, one is indeed like a rag. When you have succeeded in doing this, there is always a little flame, there - that flame never goes out and you become conscious of it when you have managed this relaxation. And all of a sudden this little flame
rises slowly into an aspiration for the divine life, the truth,
the consciousness of the Divine, the union with the inner being,
it goes higher and higher, it rises, rises, like that, very
gently. Then everything gathers there, and if at that moment you
fall asleep, you have the best sleep you could possibly have. I
guarantee that if you do this carefully, you are sure to sleep, and
also sure that instead of falling into a dark hole you will sleep
in light, and when you get up in the morning you will be fresh,
fit, content, happy and full of energy for the day.

When the sun sets, a kind of peace descends upon the
earth and this peace is helpful for sleep.

When the sun rises, a vigorous energy descends upon
the earth and this energy is helpful for work.

When you go to bed late and get up late, you
contradict the forces of Nature and that is not very
wise.

I think it's like dingoblue says, sleep paralysis. I've had it- long ago- and it is a truly scary thing. It's like you're partly awake but not able to move, then the subconscious mind starts to panic. I remember when it happened to me that I had my eyes open and i could see some of the room that I was actually sleeping in, but with some dream-hallucinations along with normal reality. Seriously spooky, but I know it was just my brain doing goofy stuff. I was overtired and stressed about some family things at the time. Sound familiar?

Dreaming and being awake are just two different states of conscience and each serves its own purpose. While
you sleep you are running life program comparisons to your
belief systems in order to maintain emotional equilibrium.
There are a lot of other boring detail that go on also, but the
really juicy part is that while your asleep your more susceptible
to all forms of input including spiritual contact. Pay close
attention to those dreams and how their going to effect you

Never felt physically "attacked", no, but have woke up feeling very afraid for no particular reason and not feeling comfortable with my surroundings. That's very rare though and hasn't happened in awhile. I had a pastor who used to say that it was his firm belief that 3am (or maybe it was 2, I can't remember) was the time many cult meetings either started or ended and it was the devil hard at work at that time that caused so many people to wake up with fear....

I usually always had the nice ones wake me up, they touch very nicely, or my Spirit senses them in the room as if I can see them, I know where they are and what their doing, and feel what their thinking.
only twice did I have Satan come to me in a dream, he may of scare me, as if it was real, and I know it was, but I feel the Spirits I see have been protecting me all my life. I do pray for protection, and usually they come, trust me, pray for protection they either hear your prayers since they are Spiritual, or God sends them.
I know no other that walked away from the many times I should of been dead.

When we are sleeping, we are in a state known as Sleep Paralysis. There are times we will wake up during this state, and it often feels just as you describe. I'm sure that this is the answer to what happened to you, so please don't be afraid.

I've had what people classify as night terrors. It was several years ago, while I was in grad school. I frequently felt physically what was going on in my dream. However, not too long after grad school and when my life calmed down, I stopped having them, thank goodness.

Psychologically, it could be a repressed memory rearing its ugly head.
From the Christian viewpoint, the entity that is attacking you is Satan, who is believed to be everywhere. What Christian theologians say to do in situations like this is you sit up in bed and you create a "hedge of protection" between you and Satan. You just sit up and say, "Get behind me Satan, you have no power here."
It might just help because it gives you something to do besides sitting there in fear.
