How can you tell the difference?

if you dont clean them well, silver will have no mold whatsoever, stainless steel can because it isn't antimicrobial , if it is then it won't last long because silver is naturally antibacterial/microbial, stainless steel, is also smoother as for silver has more ridges

If you are talking dinnerware, silver will be marked on the back, and so will stainless. So this must be something else. The silver still should be marked in some way. You could take it to a jeweler.

By just looking at it. Get a sample of both and you'll see.

Stainless has a darker reflection, silver is lighter and has a yellowish glow.

Use a magnet. It will stick to stainless and not to silver, unless it's only silver plated. What is the item?

silver tarnishes and usually has a hallmark stamped into it somewhere
