French food has two styles: classical and provincial style. Both of them are served at very high prices, which is between $25.00-$100.00/person. It also involves drinking wine while eatingin a restaurant setting. What else make french food so complicated?

French cuisine is classic. The first western cookbook was of French origin (written by Auguste Escoffier in 1903). The French developed the pastry arts, sauces, and so many classical preparations that are still enoyed today. Many of the processes take a long time to prepare (i.e. stock> demiglace> small sauce) and the knife cuts are meticulous (like brunoise vegetables in a consomme). The French take great pride in food preparation as an art form, and those who truly appreciate it are willing to pay for it.

Poulet et pomme frites DO NOT cost $25.00.

Not all French food is expensive. Only "haute cuisine" is. You'd pay the same prices in any very high-class restaurant, regardless of whether it was French food or Chinese food.

It's because the sauce needs long time to prepare (usually over night). French food is about style, so dinner is usually 2 to 3 hours long, as a result, each table does not have many turnovers.

It's like Italian food, they tend to hire waiters who have heavy accent--that makes you feel "authentic".

I have cooked french food. You might add a little expense to your food budget, but not that much. It doesn't take that much more time, just more care. I stick to cooking like that for special occasions, or when I know someone will really enjoy it and appreciate it.

Sure, that's what the Frech people try to portray to the whole world, I'm sure in France there are millions who can't afford a 5 dollars meal, expensive wines and nice setting is only for the solvent people..☺

Its just a matter of perspective. A French person might ask, "Why is American food so simple and cheap?"
