I would ask why the engine was overhauled, what is the mileage, has he done anyother maintenace type repairs? Also check the transmission fluid for darkness and or smell of being burnt. Other than that, springs are about the only other concerns, you can check the value of the car at kbb.com is you know the options and such, but 4k sounds about right

The automatic transmission may die on you - happened to a friend of mine with a 97 Taurus. Step on the gas and nothing happened.

Rebuilding the engine is not necessarily a red flag - but the transmission and steering conditions need to be checked. Have the car inspected.

don't do. its a ford
ford stands for
Fix Or Repair Daily so don't do it especially if he rebuilt the engine, and sometimes the brakes and transmission give out
how do i know? My aunt owns one and she almost got into an accident due to this car

There may also be a couple of explanations for the indications you describe, none of them very well information. Fuel hunger, electric crisis, timing chain giving up. Hopefully it is only a blocked gas filter out or a few random garbage within the gas tank.
