Nikon is certainly a more well established camera manufacturer. Okay, Sony makes the D80 sensor, but the camera company provides the algorithms to interpret the information gathered by the sensor. The D80 does NOT have the same sensor as the Sony.
The Nikon gains you entry to the huge world of Nikon lenses, which may make a difference to you some day.

Personally, I'd choose the Nikon without hesitation. We have one member here who will SLAM the Sony for you, so I'll leave the floor open for his opinion.

Here's another vote for the D80.
These two cameras provide about the same image quality in normal light conditions, but the Nikon pulls ahead at higher ISO values. They might use similar sensors, but the rest of the Nikon hardware and the Nikon firmware turn the output from the D80 sensor into better pictures. By the way, Nikon makes the machines that Sony uses to make the chips sold (back) to Nikon. Funny, eh? Now, if insane low light photography is your thing, you'll want a Nikon D50 or just about any Canon dSLR. What I'm saying is that unlike the Sony, the Nikon D80 produces clean results at dusk, and indoors without a flash, etc. It's a fantastic all-around camera.
A bigger reason to go with Nikon is the availability of lenses. With Sony, you can use new Sony lenses, old Minolta lenses, and the same third party lenses also availble to Nikon. But these can't touch the width and depth of the Nikon lens range. Macro lenses, portrait lenses, super wide-angle zooms, fish eye lenses... you name it and Nikon's got it in 5 flavors. Nikon also has great flash guns and other accessories, all fine tuned to work with the D80.
A third reason to go with Nikon is the upgrade path. With Nikon, the D80 is an entry level body. With Sony, the A100 is all they've got. With Nikon, you can get +$1000 lenses for professional work, with Sony you've got zip. I know that Sony intends to stay in the dSLR market, and in 5 years time they might have a great selection... but then again they might not...
For me, all of these advantages far outweigh Sony's built in image stabilization.
If I sound like a fanboy, I probably am - I use a Nikon D200. On the other hand, if money were no object, I switch to a professional Canon.

That is a tough question because both cameras are very similar. They even share the same sensor. The main difference is the lenses you can put on them (Sony/Konica-Minolta vs Nikon). Sony also has dust-reuction which will help if you change lenses often in the field. It also has anti-shake which helps when there is low-light and you subjects are not moving. To get the same thing with Nikon you need to buy Nikkor VR lenses, which makes each lens more expensive. If your subjects tend to move, then that wont be so important. In that case you should know that Nikon has much more lenses (still being sold) which make it somewhat more versatile. You can see http://www.neocamera.com/feature_compare_10mp_dslr.html for a detailed comparison of all the 10 megapixels cameras.

I agree with Dr Sam,
One of the bigger differences when you get into SLR cameras isn't the electronics but the optical quality. Nikon are well known for their long experience with making lenses. You would be better placed to obtain accessories and second hand lenses to augment your collection.
I have a Nikon D50 and based on its performance I have just ordered the D80. They are lovely cameras.
Sony make nice products, I just think that Nikon is better with SLR cameras.
