Depression and anxiety are caused by an unbalance in brain neurotrasmiters. I suffer from both and I am taking medication. Recently I started to smoke cigarrettes. I was wondering if cigarrettes have a bad effect also in the neurotrasmiters, that will worsen my depression and anxiety. What is the effect of cigarrettes on the brain?

Nicotine imitates a neuroreceptor called acetycholine. Smoking can help some people with anxiety if their anxiety is related to a neurochemical imbalance that actually is helped with nicotine supplementation. For example, attention deficit problems can be mediated with a nicotine patch as easily as the medication Ritalin. Something about your question makes me think even your depression is secondary to a neurological receptor deficiency. See a doctor for tests. Good luck. RN

Been there! I'm not going to get all bio. tech. on you. But as you probably know, that the Nic. in the cigs. is extremely bad for you. Absolutely no benefit to your mind(brain) and body. I'm embarrassed to say I turn to them (once in awhile), as well, knowing what I know and have seen. And I despise smoking! Go-figure. As far as your question, will they worsen your depression? Well, it won't make things better, it's an outlet for you, that is all. And you will have to quit eventually and that may depress the he-- out of you, even more! I don't know what med's your on? I never took any, so I would have an occasional drink, something to take the edge off! Until I found exercise ,as my new friend. Walk, swim, the gym, kick boxing, etc...very good to combat the blues, depression or other obstacles that get in the way. Without the med's some doc's are so free to give out. Why not give that a shot. It may change your life!

I dont know about the neurotransmitters, but I smoke as well and have anxiety. I feel that when i smoke my heart starts to beat a little faster, and have palpatations, which I also have from anxiety attacks. I dont know if smoking causes my attacks, but i feel it makes me more prone to them. I feel like smoking makes the symptoms worse for my anxiety. Like the other day, I was driving to a test and had a cigarette. I wasnt that nervous before, but started not being able to breath right after i had the cigarette, and it turned into an anxiety attack.

No No No. the unbalance is caused by bad expectations for love and sex. Get rid of them. Find a new friend . Then learn more about the old friends and family where you became depressed.

I suffer from depression and am a heavy smoker, I found myself feeling worst before being diagnosed with depression when I lit a cigarette, however ever since I have been on Ad's my tolerance of alcohol is incredible high, I can drink, and drink, and drink and not even vomit, still get hangovers.

it releases sugar in to u. when you get high on the cigarettes, it will also drive you crazy paying for them, and contently going out to get them and finally your just out there and u and the cigarette.if your capable of quiting you better do it before you get addicted to them after that you have to get into a "lock down"clinic for three months to quit cause it can't hardly be done any other way

One thing cigarettes will do is make you smell bad. That might make you feel more depressed.

No cigs do not have a bad effect on them but they are bad for your health overall.

There's more wrong with you than unbalanced neurotransmitters if you're stupid enough to start smoking.
