I really want to learn brazilian jiu-jitsu and right now I'm having a little trouble asking my parents. I'm a sophomore in high school and I juggle other sports such as golf. I want to learn brazilian jiu-jitsu as a hobby but do you think it would help me get into college such as something I could list or maybe somewhere I could get a letter of reccomendation from? I really want to take bjj but I think I would make a more convincing arguement it helped me get into a better college. Also later on if My bjj is very strong I want to become involved in Mixed Martial Arts is that a help too?

i don't think martial arts will make or break your chances of getting into college

It is a possibility but it also depends on the school. Most colleges look for some sort of extra curricular activity on top of your grades. The discipline involved may help your concentration and by default help your grades. Instructing classes might help to get you some college credits. If you are very good at Martial Arts a recommendation from your instructor might help with the application process. Another thing would depend on whether the school has a martial arts team/club. Some schools do have martial arts as part of their sports program. I would think you would be hard pressed to find one that has Brazilian Jujitsu, however. I would imagine that if they had a martial arts program it would be Tae Kwon Do, if anything.

How about get good grades and you might get in college. Instead of conning your parents into thinking if you take a martial art you will automatically be accepted. By the way I am telling your dad tonight. But seriously even if they took that into consideration you only have 2 years to go until college. How would you ever get a Black Belt from a good school in that amount of time.

I believe so. Taking a martial art teaches lessons in mental and physical discipline. Usually, averages go up a letter grade due to martial arts discipline. So right there, you are already increasing your chances at getting in. Martial arts are not going to give you a scholarship directly but many martial artists are more athletic than the average person so there may be benefits when playing other sports

Short answer: Yes.

College's, Uni's have always long lists of candiates and while learning the Martial Arts will not guarantee you a place it will help when it boils down to extracurricular activities. It's also help if you college/Uni you apply to has a Martial art section, I know a couple do in the UK.

Martial arts might help regarding discipline. The better your discipline regarding studies and work, the better your performance. Martial arts is very big on discipline. Other than that it won't help much. There is a small chance that you could get a scholarship as an athlete. But it is only a small chance.

Yes and No. If your Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu school had kids classes, and you helped out with the classes, that can count as college credit. Or if your Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu school had a demo team and you were on it, that could count as credit too. But i don't think you can major in Martial Arts. Some colleges do have Martial Arts classes and clubs though.

well my essay revolves around Tae Kwon Do.

A martial art can help you get into college, but it won't make all the difference. If you excel in it, get a black belt and/or do well in tournaments it can be thought of in the same level as a varsity sport. However, if it's just a light hobby it won't really do anything.

The golf will probily help you help you get a scholar ship. They have teams that compete. I have never seen any Martial Arts people at OSU but that does not mean there is none. This is a big campus

I think this is an excellent question.
If you choose the right school it will help you get into college. Allow me to elaborate.
At our school we study in a traditional manner.
We have three primary goals to our training and they are in this order of importance:
1) Perfection of character
2) Physical fitness
3) Self defense

I started training when I was in high school. I took the entire aspect of my training very seriously. Within the first year my grade average when up a whole point across the board and my attendance record and general attitude at school improved.
I also learned studying techniques from reading the books Sensei assigned to us to read.
