She was a Carmelite, sainted in 1822 for her piety and suffering, for her work with the persecuted and her sweeping monastic reforms

With St. John of the Cross and Anthony of Jesus, she founded the first convent of Discalced (Barefoot) Brethren in November 1568.

Here is the Catholic webpage on her:

http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/14515b.htm

"After some years her body was transferred to Avila, but later on reconveyed to Alba, where it is still preserved incorrupt. Her heart, too, showing the marks of the Transverberation, is exposed there to the veneration of the faithful. She was beatified in 1614, and canonized in 1622 by Gregory XV, the feast being fixed on 15 October."

Let's rework your question. How does one become a saint? A saint is one who is sanctified. OK. Now, how does one become sanctified>which means cleansed. More specific, washed from their sins. Those who are baptized are washed of their sins, their sins are washed away. They are no longer to walk in sin but in the light. These are those who are saints.
