Two gentlemen, Sam and Adam, approach you. Sam introduces himself and says, "I am a lawyer, but Adam is an accountant."
Based on what you know from your previoius dealings, what are each of the men's actual professions?

They are both lawyers.
If Sam was an accountant, he would have told the truth and stated that he was an accountant. However, he stated he was a lawyer. It's impossible for him to be an accountant because then he would have lied by stating he was a lawyer. So, Sam is a lawyer. Because he is a lawyer, he lies some of the time. Because he lies some of the time, the only lie he could have made would have to have been about Adam. Therefore, Adam is a lawyer.

I think that the men told their actual professions. Sam is actually a lawyer and Adam is actually an accountant... Sam's just having a bad day and doesnt feel like lying. By the way- why would a lawyer be in a business meeting with an accountant? (Unless they're in a court case for Enron. haha)

They're both lawyers. No accountant would claim to be a lawyer, since they always tell the truth. Since Sam is a lawyer, he has to be lying about something. Therefore Adam is not an accountant. Since there are only lawyers and accountants present, Adam must be a lawyer.

Since you offer no option of asking a clarifying question. Sam can't be an accountant if he identified himself as a lawyer. If this lawyer always lies about something and this is his only statement then he must be lying and Adam is also a lawyer.
