This happens to me all the time!!! For more than 2 years, it took me more than 30 minutes to get to sleep everyday. This shouldn't even happen to teenagers like me but it did.
So about two month ago, I finally had enough of the wasting time laying in bed thinking about random stuff habit. I started doing a bit of research into how I can speed up the time it takes for me to get to sleep. I had also asked questions in Yahoo Answers about this problem and found out that some people are even worse than I!!
What I found out was that there are several methods for a better sleep:
1. Try listening to soft music and not thing like hard rock which keeps you awake instead of feeling sleepy (this didn't work for me)
2. Try getting to bed everyday at the exact same time
3. If you can, try studying in a different room instead of your bedroom because this way when you enter your bedroom, all you think about is sleep and not other thoughts which can distract you
4. Take a nice long shower before going to bed and this make you feel better
Hope this helps!!

Valerian root capsules you'll get a more natural sleep and won't wake up so heavy headed like melatonin might ( does for me), but the draw back is that the stuff smells old socks....LOL but the sleep is more restful also you might try some calcium magnesium 3 or 4 at bed, garlic is also used take 3 or 4 also. no caffeine 3-4 hours before bed, or sugars or complex carbs.

Probably is anxiety. Follow a set nightly routine to wind down from your day like a warm bath, a cup of herbal tea, read a book. Avoid caffeinated beverages at all times until you get your sleep pattern set. Then only drink it in moderation and never in the evening. If none of this works you may need to see a doctor for a checkup.

The ads I've seen for Lunesta, the Rx sleep medication, talk about these very issues with ppl who have trouble sleeping. You might need to go to the doctor and describe these problems to him or her, and maybe he/she will prescribe something like that for you. Hope it gets better...you must be exhausted!
