You might try calling a breeder (get online or look in the paper for specialized dog breeders) and asking them to knock the price down a bit. If they know you are a responsible pet owner and trust you with the dog, they may be willing to go down on their initial asking price. Also, check with your local ASPCA, animal shelter or humane society. A lot of pure bred dogs come through those establishments. With the non-profit organizations though---it's really hit or miss. Most times if a pure bred comes in, they get adopted quick. So if you're going to take that route, try and stay on top of the new animals coming in. A lot of those places have websites they update regularly.

I would NOT suggest going to a pet store or a puppy mill though, the dogs that are being bred in those places tend to be inbred and have serious health problems.

Wherever you get a pit bull puppy from, you make sure that the dog has had all of it's age appropriate shots and medical examinations/procedures including spaying or neutering (get documented proof of this), and if they tell you the dog is pure bred, you get a legal certificate stating so if you're going through a breeder. Once you get your new little bundle of joy home, take he/she to your veterinarian to get a once over to make sure the dog is healthy, and also so your vet can get acquainted with your pup.

Don't look for cheap ones when buying this kind of dog. The cheap pit-bulls are the ones that end up killing little kids. So, you might save money.....but there's a possibility of doing jail time for negligent homicide. Spend the money to get one from a breeder who does it right.

PLEASE dont buy a cheap one! i have 2 pit bulls. one of them i paid 150 dollars for and the other one i paid 1350.00 for. The more expensive one is a completely different dog. she has never tried to bite me or show me that she thinks she is the boss. my cheaper one has tried to test me a few times. dont get me wrong both of them are super friendly but the more expensive one that i know for sure is pure due to the papers i received on her is such a better choice! hope this has been helpful. if you are on the west coast there is a great breeder called chapas pits. thats where i got mine. she is a blue brindle and she is the best dog that i have ever had! I agree with Micah D. I have a Pit and he is well socialized, well tempered, and very smart. He is very patient with my 2 year old grandson. He played with the puppies very well, firm but careful not to hurt them. He was not cheap.

Go to your local shelter. I just adopted a pit/lab mix and she is the sweetest thing! She needed some obiendience training but she is a great dog.

i don't know the answer to this i just wanted to say that i think its messed up that they have such a bad rep its not the dogs fault its the way they are raised i cant have one where i live(by a school) my property tax would go way up :(PEOPLE NEED TO STOP ABUSING THEIR RIGHTS TO HAVE ANIMALS IT TAKES THE PRIVILEGE AWAY FROM THE REST OF US THAT WOULD ACTUALLY BE GOOD OWNERS !
