Torbaynewf's said it well. You are a byb if you are not breeding to better the breed. That is great that their hips are checked. What about their eyes? Their elbows? Their ears? All of these are checked and guaranteed by reputable breeders. Real reputable breeders do not have kids running around. They have the time to devote to the pups and the knowledge for when it comes to corrective/progressive breeding, as well as the proper time to retire studs/bitches from breeding. Kids will learn nothing from seeing their dogs mate and have pups. There will be ten or so more pups you will need to home, while the prospective buyers ought to be looking for their next dog in a rescue or shelter. If your female is reluctant, take it as a sign. She is telling you that the world does not need more pups. Listen to her.
You honestly have no leg to stand on when it comes to reasoning your desire to breed your dogs.

Goldens need hip, elbow, eye, and heart clearances BEFORE breeding. They should be EXCELLENT examples of the breed as there are too many Goldens as it is. Have they been shown at all????????????????
This all points to backyard breeding!!! Just because you will "love them" does not mean that you are not a BYB. Having a litter "for the kids" MAKES you a BYB!!! Good breeders do it to better a breed and because they know which dogs have something to offer the breed.
Clearly there is something wrong with her. Goldens also need to be thyroid tested because it is a problem in the breed and an out of wack thyroid can lead to infertility problems. Either your vet is lazy, or something else. They should be doing something to tell you why. You will need to spend some bucks to find out though.
And each heat she goes through, she has a greater chance of having problems....so, either get her fixed, or spend what it takes to find out the problem.
I actually do have three kids, but I can tell you that of the litters that we have had, they have seen exactly TWO puppies being born. Most are born at night and they are in bed. It is not the purpose of the litter to teach them the facts of life.
And really, after the first few days, the kids lose a LOT of interest in the puppies....they don't DO anything for weeks. Then it is just a poop fest.

Unfortunately, you have been misinformed. What you describe IS backyard breeding. You are not planning a litter to improve the breed, you are not planning a litter to further the breed within the AKC, you are not planning a litter with the intent of continuing a responsible kennel... What you are doing is backyard breeding, creating a litter to give the kids an experience, to have one of your own dogs puppies, to get a bunch of dogs at one time with what you may assume to be little work.
Please do the responsible thing, & have both of your dogs fixed. It sounds like a blessing that your attempts so far have been unsuccessful. If the experience is truly what you are looking for, buy a tape, visit a breeder, set up a time for your kids to shadow a vet... there are many ways to give an experience to your kids without going through an unresearched, ill-thought-out mating between your two pets.
I don't normally come across this strongly, but YOU GIVE ALL BREEDERS A BAD NAME if you are professing to not be a backyard breeder, but intending to go through with such a mating.

Sounds like your dogs have better sense than you do ; please ! you are a backyard breeder ; are you going to have each and every pup spayed/neuter? too? Do you think that later on the pups will not fool around with each other and mom and dad - they don't know the difference; save your money and put it into a college fund for your 6 children - that is a better investment of time, money and love. They have two dogs now - let them love them.

Good for you for having their testing done! How resistant is she? Oftentimes you can time out her heat cycle so that you know when she should be bred. At this point, if she isn't terribly resistant, you can have one person hold her, and another one help your boy find his way. Also, if this isn't going to work, you could try artifical insemination. You can talk to your vet about it, but a quick search should come up with a few places that specialise in canine artifical insemination. Perhaps the best resource you could find would be a golden breeder. If you talk to somebody who has been breeding goldens for a while, they should have some good advice about how to make this situation work. You can find breeders by contatcting the Golden Retriver Club of America. From there, you can be hooked up with breeders from around the country.

Technically...you ARE a backyard breeder.
If you want to have your kids experience the "miracle of life" by breeding your dogs. Be sure you take them to the shelter and have them watch one of the dogs being put to sleep so they can experience the tragedy of death! Let them know what happens to millions of homeless pets everyday.(and possibly one of your puppies if your dog breeds) Pets that came into this world because some other backyard breeder wanted to have puppies "for the kids"

well then she is not ready to mate yet. you just need to wait, because she will be ready when she is ready. wait til she comes in again, she might be ready by then. now if she does come in then try to breed her then, but if she does not except the male in her next heat then you might think about fixing the both of them. they usually breed well, i breed the golden and i never have the problem. if it doesn't happen then you can also ask your vet about it, he may have something to give either the female or the male to make them want each other. good luck if you do breed. it is lots of fun, i have a litter of 9 pups and they are 2 days old, & cute. again good luck.

You are the definition of a backyard breeder. The other posters have said it very well, so, I won't repeat.
If you want your kids to experience the miracle of birth, watch a movie.

If she doesn't accept him as a father to her pups there's nothing you can do about it. This often happens when the male and female live together all the time. She is unlikely to change her mind on this subject.
Have you taken into account how the children will feel if any of the puppies die, or are sick and have to be put down. What about when you find homes for the pups and they leave? Please leave the breeding to the professionals and have your dogs neutered.

It's not meant to be.
So, if your dogs have 10 puppies you are going to keep them all???
Take your kids to an animal shelter if you want them to experience the birth of puppies.
