Cats get wierd if their box is dirty. They also don't seem to be able to tell a box from a corner or any other square thing. I had a visiting cat that kept going on the newspaper. I think it thought it was the box because it was the same size and shape. Your cat might be sending you a message or just plain dumb...try moving the box in your closet and see if that helps.

This is probably behavioral, likely in response to some kind of stress. For example, he may be avoiding the litter box because another cat is chasing him away, or insecure if you're away a lot. Find out why the cat is avoiding his litter box and address the root cause. In the meantime, try putting another litter box in the closet.

Hello kitty & angel pace have the suggestions I would give. If your cat is sick, the litter box in the closet shoul work. Neutered cats almost never start marking territory out of the blue. I also have had some cats (& dogs) get even, butusually was able to figure out what they were unhappy about and fixed the situatoin.
Other than that, I had one cat that found itself an exclusively outdoor cat.

First you should take him to the vet to make sure everything is alright with him. Sometimes if a cat is having health problems they might fail to use their litter boxes. You could always try adding another litter box near the closet or even place a small one exactly where he is doing his business inside the closet. Is your current box always clean? Sometimes cats can be picky. Has your cat been startled or scared in his box recently like by another animal? One of my cats kept getting ambushed by another cat so she would take care of her business in the bath tub.

Dr. Elsey makes a "Cat Attract" litter which you might try. Put it where he goes in the closet. Apparently vets are now carrying the herbs that Dr. Elsey puts in his litter which you can purchase from a vet and then put on whatever litter you use.
Since he is a male cat and the most frequent cause of inappropriate urination is some sort of urinary imbalance such as the urine becoming too alkaline and burning him when he goes. To be fair to your cat you need a vet to do a urinalysis to be sure that itis not a medcal reason.

Have you thought of moving the litter box into the closet where he normally does this? A friend of mine had the same problem, though with a female cat. If this doesn't stop it, maybe try putting a border around that general area, or, if possible, keeping the closet off limits.
I just ask: please don't hurt him!

Hi Elena...sometimes when cats inappropriately soil in areas other than the litterbox it is indicative of a medical problem. If he's constipated or has a urinary infection of one type or another this cause litterbox avoidance. When cats are using the litterbox and experience pain while going to the bathroom they associate the pain with the litterbox thereby believing by going elsewhere will feel better. Consider ringing your vet to discuss an appointment for an evaluation.

Put his food dish there. I had the same problem with a cat peeing in one spot all the time and not in his box, which I kept clean. I put his food dish there and he never went there again. Cats will not do their business where they eat. Also, make sure you're giving him enough attention during the day. Take time out to pet him and cuddle a bit. Animals need affection and attention too.

A cat will repeatedly go back to where it first peed or crapped. Get pet stain remover, if it's on carpet, and thoroughly odor. Keep the closet door closed. If the cat manages to do it again, immediately tell him no and put him outside for a little while. Repeat until he quits this bad habit.

at pet stores they have a spray that trains cats to not pee on carpets or other areas. it will wokr just fine for this. he is trying to mark his territory but it is a habit that can and will be broken by buying the spray and trying to keep ur closet closed. and also if u catch him doing it then spray HIM with the bad smelling stuff and he will go running away and stop even quicker.
